Summary
Voltaire and Frederick had their first in-person meeting on 11 September 1740. The plan was originally for Frederick to meet Voltaire and Émilie in France. However, shortly before the meeting, Frederick conveniently fell ill and asked Voltaire to meet him halfway in Cleves instead. He also writes to Voltaire: "to speak frankly concerning her journey, it is Voltaire, it is you, it is my friend that I desire to see, and the Divine Émilie, with all her divinity, is only an accessory to Newtonized-Apollo" and the very next day writes again, "If Émilie has to accompany Apollo, I agree, but if I can see you alone, I would infinitely prefer the latter. I would be too dazzled, I could not sustain so much brilliance at once; it would take the veil of Moses to temper the mixed rays of your divinities."
So, 1) That's rude. and 2) To me, that didn't sound like a hard No. It was one, but all the pleasantries and fawning make it sound like a suggestion and not a demand. Obviously Voltaire understood that it WAS a demand and didn't bring Émilie. But I was writing this on Émilie's birthday and thought "fuck it. What if V brought her anyway?"
So this is that.
