Summary
Eventually, Buck breaks the silence. “Hey, Eddie,” he says, Eddie’s name soft as a prayer on his tongue.
“Yeah, Buck?” Eddie whispers back.
Silently, Buck reaches over, grabs Eddie’s pink cowboy hat right off his head, and places it on his head.
Eddie’s blood freezes in his veins.
He grew up in Texas, so of course he knows that taking a cowboy’s hat and putting it on means you want to go home with them.Bookmarked by 014st

Summary
“Eddie,” Buck says, too fast, he sounds strange. “You picked up. Sorry it’s. It’s late I know I just. I’ve been thinking a lot-”
“My kid won’t talk to me, my parents want full custody, and I fucked a married man,” Eddie says.
Buck is quiet.
“Can you…” he says after a minute. “Can you run that by me again?”-
Eddie is not having a great time in El Paso.

Summary
“My mom died,” Buck says flatly, like reciting a fact he read somewhere. He adds a small shrug, as if that explains it. It doesn’t feel real. The words sit in the air, weightless and strange.
Eddie frowns. Bobby shifts closer.
“Are you okay?” Bobby asks gently.
Buck blinks at him, then gives a quick nod, too fast to be convincing. “Yeah,” he says. His voice is thin, brittle. “Did you want me to start lunch? I was thinking maybe that cheesy broccoli bake.”
Eddie’s brows knit together. “Buck…” he says carefully, voice low and steady.
“Or chili,” Buck continues, his hands smoothing out a crease in his jacket like that’s the thing that matters. “I think we’ve got enough ground beef.”
“Buck,” Eddie says again, firmer this time.
Buck’s hands still. He finally looks up, meeting Eddie’s eyes.
Oh.
His mom died.
or
Margaret Buckley dies, and Buck tries to navigate grief, develops a complex relationship with apple pie, while Eddie, as always, is there.

Summary
Eddie takes a slow sip of his coffee, nudging the second cup in Buck’s direction. “So…”
Buck grins, picking up the mug. “So.”
“I went to make breakfast this morning,” Eddie says casually, slowly, “thought about making eggs.”
Buck nods, not really following Eddie’s tone of voice. “Eggs sound good.”
“Went to the fridge to get the eggs…” Eddie walks in that direction, and Buck follows his gaze. His eyes land on the calendar, and he stills.
“And I saw this on the calendar.” He flicks it twice. “Kind of hard to miss it.”

Summary
So everything was okay. Eddie was going to Texas. No, he was going to his son. Christopher was the only thing on his mind. His son was the only thing on his mind.
That was what made it all the more confusing when Buck drove Eddie to the airport and when he hugged Eddie goodbye, standing outside the doors of terminal 4 at LAX, Eddie could not imagine why his first thought was please don’t say it.
Eddie wasn’t even entirely sure what he didn’t want Buck to say, but he knew, deep down to his core, that he did not want Buck to say it. There wasn’t something that Buck could say that would have Eddie falling to his knees outside of terminal 4, and Eddie really didn’t have time for that right now.
...
Eddie goes to El Paso. Buck stays behind. Neither of them say what they should.

Eddie is still in El Paso, when Buck is officially declared missing. And it's a race against the clock for the fire family to find him, before the sadistic serial killers who've targeted him push things too far.

Summary
Buck and Eddie are in perfect agreement: hide their relationship by any means necessary. Nobody needs to know, just yet.
It’s not like it’s worth shouting across the rooftops or anything.
(Except both of them want to do just that.)
OR
Buck and Eddie desperately try to get the other to crack and reveal their relationship first, and they have no clue they’re both playing the same game.

Summary
“It could be worse,” Buck says.
Eddie is pacing the length of the hotel room. Buck’s hotel room. The one that they shared last night, because they got married. Drunk married. In Vegas. By fucking Elvis. Jesus fucking Christ. If Eddie wasn’t so hungover he’d worry that the splitting in his head was a brain aneurysm.
“How, Buck? How could it possibly be worse?”
“We could have married strangers?”
(Or, Eddie and Buck get married, move in together, and then fall in love. In that order. Kind of.)

Summary
“Christopher needs two parents,” his mother’s insisting, something like pity swimming in her eyes. It’s been ten minutes since Chris left the room, and Eddie’s feeling it now, that bone-deep weariness he’s been pretending doesn’t exist. “He needs—“
“He has two parents!” Eddie yells, chest heaving. For a moment, a ringing silence fills the air. Then, voice steadier, Eddie says, “He has Buck.”
His father throws his hands into the air. “Edmundo, Buck is not family. He needs a stable home, he needs—“
“You?” Eddie cuts in, eyes flickering between his parents. His phone buzzes in his pocket, signaling a call, but he ignores it. Whatever it is can wait.
Slowly, a hoarse laugh bubbles up. “You know what happens if I die? What happens to Christopher?”
More silence.
“He goes to Buck.”
Or: Buck and Eddie have a fight for the first time in years; Eddie flies to El Paso to get his son back; Buck gets kidnapped.

Summary
Buck’s fingers tangled in Eddie’s hair, angling his head back. He deepened the kiss until all he could feel, all he could taste, was Eddie. Eddie matched his every movement like he was starving for it. For a moment, Buck wondered if they could stay here forever, drowning in each other, and neither of them would ever have to come up for air.
But unfortunately, they did need to eventually pull apart for air.
When they did, Eddie was smirking, eyes trailing up and down Buck’s body.
“Well, now that you’ve had your fun… it’s my turn.”
Five times Buck blames the full moon for why he and Eddie are acting… different, and the one time he stops fighting it.

“I’m showing people Buck!” Eddie explains excitedly, turning his phone screen towards Chimney to show him a picture of Buck smiling at the camera. But after a moment, the joyful expression fades from Eddie’s face, replaced by something more somber.
“I miss him,” he says, his eyes downcast.
“Shit, is he dead?” the stranger slurs. “I’m sorry, man.”
“He is not dead,” Chimney hurries to clarify. “They’re just codependent. Don’t worry about it.”
Or: Buck and Eddie are engaged and have separate bachelor parties. Unfortunately, all either of them can think about is the other's absence.
