    ‘Clearly you did all survive intact, at least,’ Thranduil murmured, before they could go any further.

    ‘Mostly, yes,’ Thorin confirmed. ‘A couple singed in places,’ Bilbo saw Kíli touch his hair mournfully, ‘and a few injuries among us, but otherwise we did far better than either Smaug or the orcs.’

    ‘I would never have believed it possible,’ Thranduil told him, shaking his head, ‘and yet here you all are. Impressive indeed, King of Erebor.’ Then he glanced at his son. ‘A point, perhaps, for youthful optimism.’

    ‘Several points, if you please,’ Legolas responded tartly. ‘It was a sizeable dragon.’

    ‘No Ancalagon the Black,’ Thranduil noted.

    ‘No Eärendils here,’ Legolas retorted.

    ‘Oh, I do not know about that,’ Thranduil mused, glancing around. Bilbo wished he knew what in Arda was going on, but he supposed this was likely justice. He imagined the Elves had probably felt like this around the Company several times.

    How could it be?!

    “Why did nobody tell me about this?!” Odin whirled around ready to rebuke whoever dared to lie to him. His resolve faltered when he saw Loki who was trembling on the floor falling still. Eyes closed. Not… breathing?

    He didn’t kill him, did he? Because he didn’t want to kill Loki! It was never his intention!

    “We thought Prince Thor told you!” Was Eir’s enraged yell.

    Thor didn’t. Thor didn’t speak with him about Loki at all. Not after himself dismissing the topic every time Thor tried to speak.

     

    Oh. And Loki knew. Loki knew and let him bind him knowing all the same that it would kill him. Thinking his father knew about his magic’s importance and believing that Odin wanted to kill him. After weeks of healing and coming back to life, Loki let it happen without a word!

    Foolish boy! He thought his father came to murder him! He let Odin do it and then watched him go without as much as a back glance to leave Loki die without witnesses, alone! Not uttering a word of protest! Believing Odin wanted exactly what he came for. Ah! …

    And not for the first time… Loki falling from the Bifrost… Loki almost dying for Thor… Loki dying now… By Hel!

    “And you know what we’ll counter with, Mr Whittemore,” Chris says. “Look, the DA’s willing to give him a few leniencies if he gives us a name--“

    “In case you haven’t noticed, my client is shit-scared,” Whittemore hisses. “You’re going to have to make sure he never sees the face of the man that did all this for him.”

    “What do you think we’re here for?” Chris asks, crossing his arms across his chest.

    Whittemore eases. “I got a kid his age--“

    “I know. We’re here to help.”
