Will is sitting at the bar on his 5th sprite since his date with Carlton. He had been on some bad dates but never one so embarrassingly dull. He gave up trying to talk to anyone else tonight. He wants to have to guts to ask for someone's number but what's the point. looking for a boyfriend just to have a boyfriend will only end in heart ach. Will wants love them develop organically but being gay gets in the way of that. so he just keeps drinking sprites.
eventually it's shift change at the bar and it's mike who shows up. turns out not only is he bi but he also works at this gay bar. To help pay for his English literature degree and so he can meet people in the publishing industry. it didn't take long for him to learn that a lot of writers are alcoholics.
will and mike end the night boyfriends. I think this is the perfect way to work around the epilogue boyfriend ending.

el and mike have been constantly fighting, it's basically all they do now. Most of the time it's small bitter things but recently they've been having relationship ending fights every time. Mike over now so of course they're arguing and taking things way too far again. the constant judging and insults since California finally makes him snap
"dammit el, stop it. do you really think I don't know i'm a terrible person. you don't get to act like you're not just as bad" mike screams as he punches her mirror
looking into the shattered mirror he sees his face and truly hears his voice for the first time imminently regretting what he had done. they stare at each other through the mirror with looks of horror and realization. For the first time in months they can read each others mind with out even saying it. they decided to say it anyway.

Eddie has been watching mike ever since he found out where vecna was hiding him. He had a hard time breaking free from the conformity gate curse. So it's no surprise when see's that mike is still under the spell. Mike was always the most susceptible to Normative Influences. He was so close to breaking that propaganda bubble before Eddie was turned into a vampire. To say mike looked like shit, would be the understatement of the century. What has vecna done to him, his hair, eyes, and clothes. They lack personality. it's like his soul was sucked out of his body. he's a cardboard cutout version of his old self. Eddie was always concerned about him before but this is on another level of bad. mike had always looked like he was hiding something
btw, idk if i'll finish this but I have the last chapter written out in my drafts so if I don't you'll still get a conclusion. I had to do this because I'm not touching the Byler ship without a good ending laid out.

This is a "clean" version of my s4 rewrite Steddie fic "Be Kind, Please Rewind" I'm uploading for my mother and anyone else that's interested! (Mom, don't click that link 😅)
Shortly after season four came out, I decided I wanted to rewrite it with the premise that Steve and Eddie were already dating, but I also wanted to show how they ended up dating, and ... Two years later, the story is finally done. This is my magnum opus. I want to print this, bind it, and be buried with it. I hope others find as much joy reading it as I did writing it!
