utterly fantastic: simultaneously vast & sweeping & intensely claustrophobic; the sway back & forth bet. inertia & momentum, home & Lyla, feel perfect & heartbreaking & intense. Oh, Tim Riggins. And god, the writing: fantastic.

Maybe it was just that afternoon itself, the long drive he took east out of Dillon after escaping from the babysitting duty Mindy was always trying to foist on him, heading nowhere in particular, & out the window to either side, the long flat forever of cows & fields & Texas Texas Texas, far as the eye could see. Used to be the sight of it made him smile, made him feel like he was home, laughing in his truck with Street in the passenger seat holding Lyla balanced on his lap, all three of them waving at the police as they passed 'cause nobody gave the Dillon panthers' star quarterback & starting fullback trouble in this town.

Thought, Texas forever, to himself, then had to pull the car over for a minute & get out, kick at the dirt & breathe, breathe, breathe.

    Summary

Beauty grew up in a box. He divided himself. How could he know who he was, unless he undid the wrapping? / Beauty is a black, gay, magic using (but not abusing) man with a texture fetish and a knack for roses. Beast doesn't quite know what to think (but he kind of likes it). Mom is mom and therefore awesome.

seriously, drop what you are doing and read this fic right now. the craft, the stylistic assurance, the voice, the subversions, the dedication to progressive reworkings of classic narratives make this one of, if not the, best yuletide fics i've ever read.

Okay so it's really hard to describe this piece if you don't know the truly surreal incredibly long football RPF (sort-of) narrative it's based on, which is half performance art, half a zany parody of every bad Canadian stereotype ever, and also football. But you don't need to know about any of that to enjoy this piece, which perfectly matches the tone and style of the original, and also has fantastic comedic moments featuring Tebow and football names like Doug Flutie. Oh, and hilarious bad Paint drawings.

    Also, this:

"They're amazing guys," Tim says, his heart sinking. Just when things were starting to work, starting to click, they were going to take it away.

"They sure are," says a new voice from behind him, and it's not so much a voice as a chorus of angels, a trumpet and a revelation and Tim is almost certain that when he turns around, he will meet the son of God.

"Hey," says the man, the smile on his face so radiant Tim has to squint. Huh. He was pretty sure Jesus wasn't going to be a small black man, but he's been wrong before.

"I'm not Jesus," says the man gently, putting a hand on Tim's shoulder. "But I am an Argonaut. Michael Clemons. Pinball, to my friends. And you're all my friends here." He smiles again, and Tim thinks of solar eclipses, of stars, of love.

    Just read it, my god.
