Daniel wrinkled his nose as he followed Johnny into the equipment storage at the back of the gym. “It smells like sweaty socks in here.”
“Yeah? Feel free to leave,” Johnny scoffed, pointing his thumb at the door.
The confined space was shrouded in shadows with a little light flooding in through the window above the pommel horse no one in their gym class knew how to use without making a fool of themselves.
Johnny slumped down on a pile of PVC mattresses, his shoulders hunching in defeat as it became obvious that Daniel wasn’t going anywhere and he would in fact have to share his weed.

Grantaire’s a hopeless romantic. It is part of her personality. Everyone knows this. Their friend group has stopped asking the requisite questions on the matter and just started handing her volumes of longing poetry.
“The art is useful, you should keep that,” Enjolras says earnestly, which at least is an achievement. It took hours of Grantaire and other group members pontificating on how art movements were essential parts of historical unrest and uprisings and cultural shifts for Enjolras to appreciate art. Unfortunately, she now categorizes art as 'tool of war.' Grantaire doesn’t know how to explain to her that it’s a tool forged from yourself. That the blade’s not always sharp or capable of being wielded or cutting. It is unreliable—just like Grantaire. “The pining, though,” she continues. “That has to stop. So. Who is it this time?”

“This,” his mother says later, fingers clamped around Enjolras’ shoulders, “is Grantaire.”

Summary
Luke couldn’t make out much of what the kid looked like at first with the sun glare, just that he was stocky and small and pressed his little hands against the window. Then he pressed his whole tiny face against the window, his big eyes focused on Luke. His hair was long, curly, and brown and his pudgy little baby hands hit the window occasionally. The arm wrapped around him just seemed like it was there to steady him, and after a moment he saw that back of someone’s sweatshirt, like whichever parent had come to save the baby was sitting backwards on the sill while they let him amuse himself with the forbidden outside world.
The baby gave him a toothy grin and waved. When Luke waved back, he clapped his hands and started talking, or probably babbling, to the adult that was holding him. He bounced up and down as he babbled.
And Luke just melted.
So, he did what any respectable adult would in that situation: he went cross-eyed, puffed out his cheeks, and waved his hands on either side of his face until the baby laughed.
