Summary
Soft mornings were sacred in the Temult household. Waking up to the sun filtering in through the sheer curtains, soft voices and sleep mused hair. It was a tradition to take a few minutes before dragging out of bed to the demands of the day to just be them. These moments were precious to Laudna, she held them in her hands like water, fingers pressed tight to not let any out. This is how she felt most mornings as she woke in bed next to her beloved, like she was trying to hold water forever.
In the soft morning light, Laudna's dark pools of eyes spent time unashamedly studying Imogen's face. She was starting the develop laugh lines at the corners of her eyes, a few glittering grey hairs sticking out from the beautiful lavender. Imogen hated them and would grumble about being too young for such things. Laudna thought every wrinkle, every gray hair, every aching bone- they were all the most beautiful gift she could have ever asked for. Because it meant Imogen was here with her another day, another year. It meant everything they gave up and did on a small red moon years ago was worth it. Few knew as well as Laudna that the privilege of growing old was not afforded to everyone.

She looked up at the mirror and saw the similarities in her own visage to the woman that had burst out of her form, broken her body like a wooden doll, and hurt her friends.
Hurt her Imogen…
She tore off the choker first, fisting the lace fabric and looking at the green gem briefly that had been there, then throwing it to the toilet. Flushing it with her mage hand without looking back. It didn’t matter.
She tore the poofy sleeves next from the rest of her dress. Then her eyes followed down to the cage, and she needed it off immediately. She struggled with the ties a moment, then dropped it around her unceremoniously. Leaving only her thin ombre underskirt. She was so stupid living in the cage as long as she had... It had just seemed a terrible inconvenience to fight it when she knew she’d lose and make a scene.
But today… well those things had happened anyway.
She untied her hair and wished she could tear it out. She was a puppet at the end of her strings… sick of the ropes.
Then she looked down at the scissors on her belt and grabbed them with haste, looking back at her reflection.

Imogen was trying to repair her relationship with her mother, and Liliana was trying her best to be a good mother. Laudna could not be the reason that it failed. She was going to be a good unofficial wife and daughter-in-law.

But that was then. And this is now. Laudna is here. With her. They’re here together in this massive, strangely homely tree snuggling up together in the dim hue of a fireless flame after playing fucking spin the bottle while the world is burning around them. She’s here, with Laudna.
