It was sick, that’s what this was. It was sick. Shane’s too-long hair—Ilya’s choice, always a reminder of Ilya—was drenched with sweat, and it stung his eyes, having escaped his helmet. It felt like a brand. Like Ilya had whipped him across the face and he wore the mark in front of everybody. It was sick, that it excited him, to wear his hair the way Ilya liked it in public, it was sick, but he wore that sickness with a thrill. He couldn’t stop smiling. It felt like his face would crack under the force of it. It felt like he’d earned this. Because he had, he’d fought for it, for so long. Had thought the moment the world found out about his and Ilya’s private life, over a year ago now, that he would never have this again, had shrunk away in misery and shame from all of it. Never again. He never wanted to go back.

The first sound Ilya hears is a thin, discordant symphony of beeps and whirs. Something vibrating.
The next thing he hears is…wet. A sort of shaking, gargling sound, that feels like the ugliest crying he’s ever heard. And through it, Shane’s voice.
“I’m with him now, mom. He’s— he’s not fine. He’s not. I know—”
Ilya wants to ask who's not fine, but he can’t feel his own body, his mouth, enough to ask.
“Yeah,” Shane is saying, only slightly calmer. “I know. He wasn’t breathing—"
Ilya knows there's a link, between the clinical musicality of medical settings, Shane’s audible, awful distress, and his own physical incapacity. It’s just, it’s so tenuous, and the air around him is so thick, so heavy. It would be easy, to sleep, a little.

He sniffed. “I don’t think I’m strong enough to leave. Leaving feels like giving up. But so does staying.”
“No.” Ilya shook his head and shuffled forward so his body was mirroring Shane’s, twin parentheses encompassing their shared years in between worn bodies. “No, my love.”
