The barista has turned a brilliant shade of red, nodding stiffly as she hastily turns to pick up a second cup for the chai. “R-Right, and the—name on your order?” Almost immediately, she cringes, as though deeply regretting her misspeak. Shuichi can relate. He’s barely breathing right now, much less thinking about speaking, but if he were to open his mouth, he’s pretty sure he’d do the exact same thing.
A chuckle sounds from above him, rich and warm and so much clearer than Shuichi’s ever heard it on TV. He lifts his head, chancing a quick glance at the man out of the corner of his eye, and finds that Amami Rantaro’s gaze is focused quite devotedly on the barista, but that he’s smiling, the charming, toothy grin that made Shuichi’s heart flutter the first time he saw it. In fact, it makes his heart flutter now, even though Shuichi is sure that it’d stopped beating when Rantaro first came over and touched him.
“That’ll be Amami,” Rantaro says, sounding amused. “How much do I owe you?”
