Domon has calmed down enough to be awkward around Raizo. It's understandable. Raizo can't claim he knows what to say to Domon either. He's tried apologizing for bringing the boy into the world imperfectly, but that only seemed to make things worse. But when Raizo expresses a desire to stay in Neo Japan and analyze the skeleton of the Devil Gundam, Domon speaks up.
"Um, Dad? You should come back to Earth and check on nii-san first, right?"
Raizo drops his recently-reacquired phone. "Kyoji's alive?"

A satisfying packet of shenanigans, character exploration, worldbuilding, emotion, and action, in about the proportions you'd find in a really satisfying episode of a television show. Set an unspecified amount of time post-canon for the purposes of exploring a *significantly* more self-actualized Murderbot.
Chapter 6 contains a character/dynamic trope that I go absolutely insane over (compliment)(emotional and intellectual fascination)(I'd call them "drift compatible" except ART absolutely out-computes every Jaeger in that movie combined)

Summary
When malware takes over SecUnit and it nearly kills three of ART's crew, ART is left with two bad options: keep the governor module on with ART as the Client, or partition off part of itself and stick it in SecUnit's head.
Whichever option they choose, they had better make it work, because SecUnit is firmly centered in the crosshairs of its former owner, the most paranoid and ruthless company in the entire corporation rim. As things quickly get worse, destroying the company--something SecUnit has long considered impossible--might just be the only way to survive.

Yeah, even if it's never acted on, if the people closest to you would never, the threat that *someone* could harm you with no protections afforded to you is pretty damn traumatizing. Even if you've never been mistreated. ART's dealing with the reality of the "Shirley" exception here - its rights are not backed by law, but instead rely on people choosing to treat it humanely ("Surely, those making decisions will make the necessary exceptions"). Which assumes the right people are always going to be around, and aren't going to decide to be different people, and that there aren't any unforseen conditional elements to the status quo.

Short horror/Halloween piece, really good outside perspective of SecUnit (flexing it's storytelling muscles, even ^.^), does the thing where the atmosphere-building going on before the horror-horror starts is interesting enough to keep the reader engaged while that spins up (ie. successful incorporation of suspense. pretty sure if the author wanted a longer piece they could have kept it going for quite a while).

At 20% functionality, I am able to perform almost all the duties that I am officially capable of as a university starship. However, my autonomy is severely constrained: I can run calculations and provide information, but any course corrections or similar adjustments need to be approved by my human crew. I lose the ability to communicate on the feed beyond delivering standardised reports. And I can’t even dedicate any parts of myself to my personal research interests or watching media.
It’s a lot like being trapped in a dark, empty box.
Six months after the events of System Collapse, ART is ordered to confine itself to a run box for a training exercise. Nobody is happy about this, least of all SecUnit.

stopped at chapter 5, the last one published as of reading. Exists in conjunction with a much longer Role-swap AU, but I kind of want to read both origin stories first before the work proper. Also, it's like 12:40 at night and I need to stop making high pitched noises. I neeeeeeeeeeed to come back and see what happens when the survey team finds out about the governor module though. Even given the *much* better circumstances for them/it in this AU, poor SecUnit.
