“Are you alright kid? You look like you’ve been in a fight.” The words taste odd in his mouth, because he knows better. And he is tired of knowing better. Still, like always, he ignores the piece of him that insists on doing the right thing. Absently, Paul wonders how many times a thing like that can be ignored before it withers and dies.
Paul keeps his eyes on the road as Pony thinks the question over. It’s a moment before he answers, silence filled by the radio he’d forgotten he left on. News. Not local. He’d wanted to hear about someplace else. Someone else’s problems.

“I don’t know what to do with all of it,” he admitted. “The stuff in my head. Dunno how to hold it.”
“Well, you can start by sharin’ it a little,” Darry said awkwardly.
Pony looked at him then. Really looked at him. Darry’s jaw was tight, like it always was when he didn’t know exactly what he was doing. His hands were tightly folded between his knees, knuckles pale. But he meant well. His eyes were soft.
All the walls Pony had built up since the hospital – since the funeral, since the court hearing – they didn’t exactly collapse. But they cracked. Just a little.

It starts with a cigarette and a silence too heavy for one person to carry. Ponyboy’s grieving in pieces he didn't know he could. Darry’s trying to be something he was never taught to be. On a quiet porch, under stars that don’t shine like they used to, they talk — really talk — about what’s been lost, what’s still left, and what might come next.

“I’m fine,” Darry mutters again, but it’s even more hollow now, more useless. Soda’s still crouched at his other side, one hand steady on Darry’s wrist like he’s grounding him there.
“No, you’re not,” Pony says, but there’s no judgment in it. Just truth. “And that’s okay.”
Darry lets out a breath that sounds almost like a laugh, except it’s broken in half. He drags both hands down his face and then presses his palms into the edge of the table like he needs something to hold on to. “I ain’t ‘sposed to fall apart. Not in front of you two.”
“Why not?” Pony asks. “We fall apart in front of you all the time.”

A month and a half after the funeral, Darry’s doing his best to hold everything together. But the broken pipe, the long days, and one sharp argument with Ponyboy push him past his limit. When he breaks down in the kitchen, it’s his brothers who help him — quiet, steady, and refusing to leave. It still hurts. But they’re in it together.

Blond hair and blue eyes crossed his vision. A smile that could kill you followed with the laugh that made you think hey, she’s alright. She did laugh when she held it. It echoed in Two-Bits head, and his face burned.
He shut his eyes tightly and faced away from the mirror. He covered his face with his hands as he forced the image of her out of his mind. He dug the palms of his hand into his eyes until he saw stars. It didn’t work as well as he’d hoped.
“You alright?”
The voice distracted him enough so he saw another pair of blue eyes: Soda’s.

His ears are ringing, and he’s pretty sure he’s bordering on passing out.

Dad didn’t understand Pony anymore than he did, even if he loved his son to pieces and would do anything for him. It wasn’t for a lack of trying, there was always just something about Ponyboy that few could decipher. Everything meant everything to Pony; there was always a reason, always another layer, always something deep and complex that he had to work through in order to understand it. To their father-- to Darry, for that matter-- those kinds of mind puzzles didn’t exist. Everything was just what it was. There wasn’t much to it. Still, always Dad listened to Ponyboy’s stories, wiped his tears, taught him to tie his shoes, bought him the books he’d mention wanting, even if he could never understand the well of tenderness his brother held inside of him.
Mom and Soda were different in that way. Mom especially.
Give him some time, honey, she’d say. He needs to feel everything first. Let him come to you.
But Darry was never a patient guy. There was no use waiting for his little brother to come around on anything.
Life can’t stop for you to feel the weight of it. Not even when it’s crushing you.

Summary
They sit in silence for a while, and it's almost as if there's a weight hanging between them now. Darry doesn't push the issue, but there's something about the haziness of Ponyboy's eyes that has Darry reaching forward to feel for his forehead. He's hot to the touch, and he frowns. “Do you feel sick?”
Pony shakes his head. “I dunno. I'm okay. You should go back to bed.”
“You don't make the rules 'round here, kid. How long have you been feeling like this?” Darry asks.
“I ain't sick.”
“You're burning up a bit there, kiddo,” he tells him quietly, pushing Ponyboy’s bangs away from his face.
“Not true,” he argues, shaking his head.
Darry furrows his eyebrows. “Why are you arguing with me?”
“Am not,” Pony replies, like it’s autopilot just to counter anything Darry has to say to him.
He rolls his eyes. “Alright, tough guy. Hold still for a second.”~

There’s an unfrosted cake sitting in the center of their table, and it’s rotting away.
Darry tries to ignore it. His eyes, head, chest, limbs themselves throb every time he looks at it—so he doesn’t. No one’s touched it, even though they’ve scrubbed every other inch of the house far past clean by now. It simply sits there, made stale by unrestricted air that dries it out and makes it unappetizing in addition to completely untouchable.
The ants will have their way soon, though, because for the first time in Darry’s memory, a chocolate cake has gone uneaten for an entire two weeks.

Darry’s eyes fly open just as his baby brother collapses, and all of a sudden, he’s running in slow-motion, trying in vain to close the distance between him and Ponyboy before the kid hits the concrete. Two-Bit makes it there first, catches him before he can get banged up any worse, and by the time Darry’s beside them, Two’s got Pony close to his chest, cradling his head in his arms.
“He’s sick,” Two-Bit’s saying when Darry and Soda kneel down next to them. “Shit, he was—he was running a fever before the rumble but he made me swear I wouldn’t tell ya, so I—”
“Ponyboy,” says Soda, reaching out to shake his brother’s shoulder. “Pony, honey, wake up.” Darry puts a palm to Pony’s forehead and finds that Two’s right; the kid’s burning with fever.

“Um, my brother’s really sick,” he explains, his voice shaky. “He’s been throwing up for, like, twelve hours and he can’t—he can’t keep anything down and he’s got a real bad fever and he’s asking for our mom and I don’t—” He lets out another strangled sob. “I don’t know what to do.”
“I’ll be there in fifteen minutes,” she says. Darry chokes out a sigh of relief.

Darry let out a breath and leaned back in his chair. His arms crossed over his chest, like he needed to hold himself together.

Sodapop wakes in a cold sweat, haunted by a nightmare he can’t remember, only that it was about Darry and Pony and losing them. When he finds Darry still awake at the kitchen table, buried in bills and silence, the two brothers end up talking in a way they haven’t in years. "You better shut up, Darrel," Pony spat, voice raising. "Let go!" He demanded, resorting to slapping Darry’s arm, trying to push him away. Tears sprang into his eyes, and whether it was from frustration or grief, Ponyboy couldn’t tell. He just wanted to go back to bed and sleep his sorrows away.
