“ You do not want to do this, trust me.” Soap speaks, the way he says it sending Malachi’s nerves on edge and pissing him off even more.
“Oh I think I do.”
Soap pauses, the slight amusement in his features turning to a full blown smirk as he rolls his eyes. “Alright, have it your way.”
There’s a slight pause where neither of the men in the cell move, then Soap’s head ever so slightly tilts to the side as he speaks one word, voice firm and serious. “Ghost.”
Its the last thing said before the cell they are in drops into complete darkness, followed by the sound of shattering glass. Then a voice reaches Malachi’s ears: hard, cold, and deadly.
“Copy.”

After the lawsuit, Buck’s still on the outs with most of the team, despite being back a month and apologising almost daily. Waking one morning, and knowing it would be a rough day, Buck relishes with the knowledge that he’d be left alone and treated worse than a probie… except someone’s out with flu and Bobby reluctantly puts him back on calls for the day as a last resort. Something that should make him feel on top of the world ends up feeling like another punishment. Vowing not to let the weight of the day get to him, he tries to keep his head down, only for their first call, Buck’s first in months, end up being one that forces him to relive his past and he reveals things about himself he’d kept secret for ten years.

And he’s starting to doubt that he was ever really as strong as he thought he was, because it feels like he was never meant to be sober, never meant to be six years clean.

"You could say that. If the week included the past—almost three months." Buck picked his drink up off the counter, taking a long swig in an attempt to stave off the awkwardness. His face scrunched in disgust at the taste, and he blinked rapidly in shock as he pulled it away from his mouth. Salt?

Summary
He knew the second that Buck walked into the 118 that he wasn’t going to be like any other firefighter Bobby had ever met. But, that wasn’t the whole story. Perhaps there was a child sized hole in Bobby’s heart that hadn’t been filled yet when he met Buck. Or maybe it was because there was a gaping parent sized hole in Buck’s heart since he was born. All of this together caused Bobby to take Buck in as his own. Well, emotionally. He was still Buck’s boss after all.
Needless to say, Bobby knew a lot more about Buck than he did his other firefighters. For example, he knew Chimney’s favorite dinner and Hen’s preferred medical bag, but he knew that all Evan Buckley wanted was to have a family, a partner, and children. Honestly, he wouldn’t be surprised if other people knew that too. While other people knew, Bobby, as both Buck’s boss and dad, was the only one who wanted to and could do something about it. He used his paternal desire to meddle, and his bossly ability to hire someone who could fill all of Buck’s needs.

That the hurt he thinks he’s seeing on the android’s face is just a program, and that the curls on top of his head are nowhere near as soft as they look.
“I’m whatever you want me to be, Lieutenant,” Buck answers him calmly, and his voice is just as gentle and undeterred as always. “Your partner. Your buddy who’ll happily watch your son. Or just a machine. Designed to accomplish a task.”
