do badgers dream of chocolate hobnobs? by gingertart50

    pomona sprout
    general | 5.5k words

i have such a soft spot for the idea that - despite dumbledore being convinced that they couldn't be told of his true loyalties - several staff members had managed to work out what snape was actually up to during deathly hallows. this fic takes that premise and examines it really interestingly through the lens of professor sprout - a character, like all hufflepuffs, who never otherwise gets a huge amount of credit for their deductive abilities in the canon text.

Tom would do anything to not be sent back to the orphanage over the summer, even if it means taking up with an old man he hates.

(Or: Albus Dumbledore is made of contradictions.)

    concordance by laeveteinn

    albus dumbledore/tom riddle
    explicit | 33k words

this is a perpetual favourite for me - just exquisitely written, with a really incisive grasp of how the elaborate masks behind which both tom and dumbledore live mean that they feel simultaneously compelled to push the other away and cling onto him. it's a lovely version of tom - lonely and fractious - but it really stands out as having one of the best-written dumbledores i've ever seen. his cunning and contradictions, his guilt and his grief and his lies, are all expressed beautifully.
