“I still had the cloth with his blood on it from when I removed the microchip and I ran some tests on it, and I’ve been able to isolate some of the antibodies, but I also discovered a chemical messenger—an altered form of the Flare. It’s mutated in a way that tricks the original virus into believing Thomas is already infected. Which he is—just not in the same way. This strain is benign. It leaves his brain untouched while acting as a shield against further infection. A biological quirk. If we can extract enough of these messengers and successfully replicate them in the lab, we could create not just a cure but a vaccine. A vaccine, Newt!”
A dreadful realisation grips Newt’s heart. “But the Flare grows in the brain.”
Teresa meets his gaze, her voice steady. “It does.”
“Find someone else,” Newt says, the raw edge in his voice betraying his desperation.

Eddie looks at him, scowling. “What, Richie?”
“Where is it that you go?”
“What?”
There’s really no other way to ask it, Richie reasons with himself, and rolls with it. He knocks on Eddie’s forehead again, softer this time, and asks:
“When you get lost in your head. Where is it that you sneak off to?”
Eddie doesn’t say anything for a moment. They continue to walk towards his house, stepping over bumps in the sidewalk, stepping on cracks, and avoiding the half-eaten apple that has been in front of the Andersons’ house for three days in a row now. Richie thinks he’s not going to answer the question, or tell Richie to leave him alone, but then Eddie sighs and cranes his head back to look at the sky again.
“I don’t know exactly,” Eddie admits, voice hushed. “All I know is that it’s somewhere far away from here. Somewhere with a skyline and no walls.”
Or, the summer before senior year, Eddie keeps getting lost in his head and Richie keeps trying to find out where he goes
