Rey looked at him for a long moment, and Ben thought she might slap him. She didn’t. She started to laugh, shaking her head as if she couldn’t quite believe it. Finally, she said, smiling, “Goodnight, Ben.”
Ben turned and walked slowly back to his car. He heard her door creak open, but he didn’t hear it slam shut. It felt as if he was walking away from his chance, from his chance to have something good and uncomplicated and nice.
Ben turned around, and went back to the door. Rey waited for him, biting her lip. He took off his stocking cap and held it in his hands in front of himself. His ears were cold without his hat, but he was in the posture of remorse and penance. "I'm sorry. I'm an ass. Can I kiss you again?"

Rey turns around again, starting to descend the steps, leaving him alone in the temple. ‘You can’t be here. Go back to your sycophants.’
He stands up abruptly and she flinches, shying away. ‘Have we really regressed back to being enemies now? After all this time?’ He motions between them, to the ephemeral, unbreakable bond.
Rey faces him, her hazel eyes so full of sorrow; it pierces straight to the core of him, an arrow to the heart. ‘You made your choices. You chose the Dark, Ben. You chose to kill the rebels rather than help them. There’s nothing I can do to help you anymore. So yes, you’re my enemy. And you need to leave.’ She turns away again, starting down the flight of steps that lead away from the cliff. The water in the pool undulates as her footsteps peter out, and Kylo stares into the pool, at his reflection, the scarred, damaged face that doesn’t even come close to portraying the conflict within. The face of the First Order. He hates it more than he ever has.

A small part of her had hoped that the dream she’d had was just her subconscious playing tricks; that Leia’s cover story about the battle droids had been true. But here he is, Kylo Ren – Jedi Killer, murderer of Han Solo and countless others, apprentice Sith – kneeling in front of her, head bowed.
She recovers herself, pulling out the blue lightsaber but holding off on igniting it. ‘Quite the theatrical entrance, Ren. Don’t strain yourself on my account, though.’
Her enemy shakes the tangled curls out of his eyes and glances up at her. His face creases into such a dreadful scowl that Rey breaks eye contact.
‘Is this a joke?’ Ren hisses from between clenched teeth, still holding his injured side. ‘I summon the Supreme Leader and he sends me the damned scavenger?’
Rey shrugs. ‘You must be out of favour. Wouldn’t be anything to do with being beaten up by a girl, would it?’
