They were in a cave, but the entrance was close enough for the moon and stars to cast their pale light inside. He stood slowly, using the wall Viktor sat against to balance without his leg brace. One shuffling step towards the entrance; another. The air was clear and cold, sapping all warmth from his body.
"We are a tad underdressed for the weather," Viktor said dryly, seeing him shiver.
Jayce laughed. "We're underdressed for everything except one of Count Azika's famous parties."

Viktor places the chalk down with a clack. "Then, come here, Jayce.”
Weeks have come and gone from that fateful night in the lab. Weeks have gone by since Jayce felt the soothing strokes against his scalp.
Viktor knows how much he wants it: the cotton in his brain and the sweetness on his tongue. He knows that Jayce wants to bend his knees and find that peace.
And yet, alas, Jayce is nothing if not stubborn.

“Is that… a possibility?”
Viktor shrugs, completely unbothered. “A probability, actually. Although Dr. Reveck assured me that it would be mild.”
“Mild insatiable bloodlust?!?”
“Yes. He did not provide many details, but he appears to be using this strain of shimmer to engineer some sort of lupine creature with astounding abilities. Apparently the creature is driven to near madness by the smell and taste of blood.”
Jayce swallows down the saliva that keeps flooding his mouth. “Huh.”OR
Jayce and Viktor experiment with using shimmer as a cure for Viktor's lung condition. Things don't go as planned

Observation 1 : Jayce is terrible at taking care of himself. It is a regular occurrence that he neglects sleep, nutrition and his own mental health in favour of work. The consequences are numerous and detrimental to his well-being, as well as their progress on the Hexgates.
Observation 2 : Jayce is incredibly responsive to direct orders and praise, and seems—on a subconscious level—increasingly more willing to accomplish a task if given an outside command.

The anomaly spits Jayce out years in the past, with all the knowledge of exactly how he'll ruin the future. He tries to explain how important getting back to his own time is to Viktor; a younger Viktor who can still convince both of them that there is always a new choice to be made.
Unfortunately for them both, Jayce is touch-starved and crumbling, and the rune embedded in his wrist does more than just time travel.

Then, there’s a second problem—the medication’s greatest side effect is making Viktor incredibly aroused. Jayce can help with that, too.

“Does it hurt?” Jayce rasped, his tongue heavy and wet in his mouth, his pounding heart almost drowning his own voice.
Viktor tipped his head toward Jayce, just enough that over his sharp, jutting shoulder, Jayce could see the glistening tears collected at the corner of his eye. “Yes.”
Something seized inside Jayce, pooling low in his belly. Something not unlike desire. Jayce depressed the plunger, watching as the serum disappeared inside Viktor, who let out a small, breathy whimper. A groan of pleasure followed soon after, Viktor’s boney hand curling into a fist on the desk surface.
