Summary
Neil can feel the letter in his pocket, heavy with lead dragging him down. It’s a death sentence disguised like a gift.
Out of all of the ways he thought he would go, this wasn’t one of them; a gun in hand, a bullet in his chest. Maybe this is his merciful end, maybe he should be grateful. After years of relentless running, fear eating him from the inside out, he’s been offered an easy way out.
Andrew will wake soon, the slow trickle of a city waking dragging him from fitful sleep. Neil will have to look at his sleep smudged face, eyes soft in the early hours of the day, and tell him. He’ll show him the rumpled letter, his name marked on it in blood red ink.
He’s had the letter for weeks; he’s been counting down the days, a bomb armed to blow. He doesn’t know how to tell Andrew, he doesn’t know how to prepare himself for the look on his face, crestfallen and utterly devastated and angry. He doesn’t want to see the slow dawning of realization take over his face, a storm of anguish, the knowledge that he’s going to lose Neil for good.
In the end, it wasn’t the running that got him, it was the staying.

“A key is a hopeful sign, and an interesting juxtaposition with a wild animal’s paw print,” another therapist says to him, years later. Andrew is twelve and he’s never shown this one his soul mark, but it’s in his medical file, like everyone’s is. The doodle of the key, now sharp enough in his mind that even the teeth are the same every time, Andrew let slip by accident.
“A key could mean a lot of things for someone like you,” the man continues. A foster kid, he means. A kid who hasn’t lasted longer than a year in the same household his whole life, he means. “What do you think it might symbolize in your relationship with your soulmate? A place to call home?”
Andrew doesn’t get to have a place to call home. He knows that.
“A door that locks,” Andrew says flatly.

Summary
Palmetto State University experiences a category six earthquake. Andrew Minyard, trapped in a crumpled building and waiting for help, suffers through the dark and damp room with another student he can’t see and doesn’t know.
The other student, as one does in a life-or-death situation, fatalistically begins sharing all his secrets—he hates cookies, he thinks his roommates are kind of annoying, he kissed a girl and he didn’t like it, he grew up with the mob, he has a million dollars, he’s killed a man (well, probably).
But Andrew and the stranger are eventually rescued and do not die.
And the stranger in the dark disappears without even a face for Andrew to put to a name.

“Kevin Day told me about you.” The corners of Neil’s mouth lift the barest degree. It should be an unassuming, polite smile. Should be.
Andrew isn’t convinced. He hums and leans back in his seat. “You know Kevin.”
“We go way back,” Neil explains. He’s not giving any signs that indicate he’s lying, but still. Kevin usually holds his liquor better than he holds his secrets but Andrew thought he knew everyone Kevin has known since Palmetto State and he’d remember if this guy had been in the Nest.
“He’s never mentioned you,” Andrew says.
“I rarely mention him,” Neil replies easily.
