Nico had a timer on his forearm that counted down to the moment he met his soulmate. It did not, however, tell him what he was supposed to do once he met them.
Nico di Angelo hated the concept of soulmates. He wanted to choose who he spent his life with, and he certainly didn’t trust a stranger not to break his heart. True love was something that happened to other people; it did not happen to him.
If given the choice, Nico would have gone the rest of his life without ever meeting his soulmate, but no, the universe just had to pair him with Will Solace, a hopeless romantic he had nothing in common with and who thought Nico’s approach to soulmates was cynical and pessimistic.
It couldn’t work. It shouldn’t work…
…but Fate had a plan for him, and Nico was about to learn that falling in love was a long slow descent.

It's something our brain makes up. It doesn't really exist. So how come everyone made a big fuss about meeting and touching their soulmate so they could see in color? After all, what's so bad about black and white? Aren't they colors too?
That's what Nico thought anyway. His sister had died seeing the world in black in white. If she never got to see color, then it won't be a big deal if he lives the same way. Besides, the implications of seeing in color—the realization that you've touched your soulmate—that might not be something he's ready to confront.
So, no. Nico did not see the point of color.
That is, until he touches his soulmate and sees what he's been missing out on...

They were so pale, though, and the lines so thin that they were almost illegible. They were delicate like spider silk, and just as easily brushed away. One day, here: the next, they were gone. Nico had never heard of soulmarks going away, but most of his rarely stayed for long. Nico thought the connection must be staticy. Maybe Nico's soulmate was a ghost. Usually, the marks turned gray if your soulmate was dead. Nico could talk to dead people, though, so maybe it wasn’t as much of a problem.
He always fit in better with the dead, anyway. He was a relic from another time. The living never wanted someone cursed like him. They thought he was annoying. Morbid. Creepy.
It made a lot of sense."

The third time he died, he sees the same blonde in a too big doctor's coat. They talk for a bit before he wakes up in his body again. He rules it off as coincidence, or his dad's idea of a joke.
It's the fourth time that Nico sees the boy that he starts to worry, because when he sees Will again, Nico is still very much alive, and very much stuck in camp with a boy with too many questions he doesn't have the answer to.

Your soulmate is the only one who can see your Soulmark until you accept the bond, then your Soulmark is a permanent tattoo on your body. Souls have different levels of purity and when you meet your soulmate, your powers/affinities surface. A purity of 5 is the purest of souls and very few people have this because it means real powers. Anything below that is just a knack for certain things, like some people are good at singing or swimming.
Nico didn't think he was worth anything. His father never bothered to get him tested because he deemed him weak of soul. Nico spends his whole life blaming himself for the loss of his sister and when he comes to power as Leader of the New York Mafia, the darkness that has overcome him since Bianca's death is running constantly beneath his skin.
