“Like a burden.” Keith answers bluntly, nails digging into the mattress. He stares down at it, unable to look at Lance as he explains himself further. He knows what he’ll see, knows Lance’s smile will crumple and give way to a deep frown. He feels Keith’s hurt as rawly as his own. “It’s all I’ve ever been. I cost my mother her life, I ruined my father’s, I wasted the time and resources of every orphanage or foster family that ever took a chance on me, I spat in the face of all the Garrison leaders who saw potential in me, I let Shiro down. I’m going to disappoint the entire fucking universe now. And... I-I’m draining you.”

Summary
When the officer drops his key in Lance's hand, he spots a big red number seven on the side. He turns to Hunk hopefully but is disappointed when he's shown a green three on his card.
Allura cranes her neck to call Keith, who's staring at his key like it personally offended him. "Keith? What is the number on your card?"
"Seven," he replies, lifting his card for everyone to see. Lance's heart sinks to the floor.
After returning to Earth, the Galaxy Garrison forces Team Voltron to quarantine, and Lance shares a room with Keith.

Summary
“I like it,” Keith blurts, practically signing off the measurements of his coffin with how straightforward that feedback is.
Lance’s head swiftly tips downward to finally look at Keith. His face is the shell of a reaction, toeing between something wild and something passive. A few locks of hair swing down and hang loose along the edge of his forehead, kind of like Allura’s doll-like ringlets that dance around with every expressive motion she makes. The overhead light is barely obscured from Keith’s view by his friend’s towering figure, and it’s almost like Lance is simultaneously both something nostalgic and completely foreign.
“You do?” Lance asks with a genuine curious lilt. His knuckles shift anxiously against the seams of the shorts’ pockets.
“Yeah.”
Keith can’t take his eyes off Lance.
Or: 3 times Keith was struck dumb by Lance’s beauty and 1 time he didn’t just stare.

“Shiro,” he said out of the corner of his mouth. “I can’t drink this.”
“Why?” Shiro asked through his smile.
Keith glanced over to where Lance was asking if any of the Xaligas had heard of bendy straws. The aliens, as per usual, were enchanted by him.
“Because,” Keith’s teeth were locked shut to keep from chattering. “It might cause an intergalactic incident.”
Shiro’s eyes widened ever so slightly. “That’s a good reason.”When the gang is served a truth serum by an untrusting group of aliens, Keith is forced to reveal a rather inconvenient secret. This is bothersome, considering half of the galaxy is in love with Lance.

Summary
As it turns out, it's very easy to misjudge a person's entire behaviour if you don't properly look. If you let yourself be fooled by the walls they build around themselves to feel less vulnerable, less scared.
Yes, it's easy to look at Lance and Keith, different as they are, with the constant glares and fights and screams of “He started it!” and think that they hate each other. But that's just a common misconception. The truth, as it often is in life, is much more complex, but also more beautiful in its absurdity.

The room was eerily quiet, despite the two boys sat on the floor. When people describe silence they tend to talk about it as if it were a couch. Comfortable or uncomfortable.
But, Lance thought, there were a lot of ways of describing silence. There was the silence before the first firework crossed the night sky, filled with excitement, the kind that made your heart race and your cheeks flush and your eyes fill with unshed tears.There was also the silence of an empty place, which told stories of the people that had come and gone before, of love stories and laughter and loss and pain.
