Summary
I know it’s not him. I never believed it was. But some part of me lets the lie settle for a second longer, lets the ghost shimmer just enough to fill the empty spaces. Inside the apartment, the door closes with a soft click, final and certain. The air smells faintly of cologne, of something metallic, clean, and cold. It's clinical with a hint of mold. He was expecting someone to come home with him. I let myself step forward, just a little, allowing the space to swallow me.
This desire is what makes us human, our basic need to be watched, once satisfied by God alone, now sought through the validation of human connection.
