When Obi-Wan was on Melida/Daan, huddling against the other children in the trenches and trying to rub their fingers between his palms to stave off frostbite, he imagined his homecoming to the Temple a thousand different ways.

The doors to the hoverlift opened on Obi-Wan’s floor, and Mace was pleased to note that it was quiet in the hallway.

Today was Benduday, which meant that he had a very special obligation to uphold.

    Summary

Anakin had come to the very obvious conclusion that Obi-Wan Kenobi was completely, horribly inept with technology.

Obi-Wan had come to the even more obvious conclusion that his Padawan was the most gullible and unobservant person in the entire galaxy.

“I was hoping it was a dream,” he said in a quiet voice.

Pity flitted across Quinlan’s face. “Sorry. But we’re on our way back to the Temple right now and we’re gonna get this figured out.”

Obi-Wan sniffled and nodded. He reached out a hand for Boga, who was curled at his bedside. The frame was very low to the ground, giving him easy access. Boga chirped him a greeting and dipped her head into his palm. He ran his hand through her feathers for a few seconds, focusing on the way they slipped through his fingers.

    “Are you hungry?” Quinlan asked.

Obi-Wan shrugged one shoulder and looked away.

[or: on the way back to the Temple after being transported to the middle of the Clone Wars, a young Obi-Wan struggles with food on the Negotiator.]

“Boga?” Quinlan whispered, already moving to sit up and draw the blankets away. “What’s going on?”

Boga didn’t answer, obviously, just drew back and swung her neck in the direction of the corner of the room, where Obi-Wan was sitting in a corner, rocking back and forth.

“Shit,” Quinlan said, as quietly as he could manage in the moment. Another bad night, then.

[or: after the war, Obi-Wan has a bad night, but Quinlan helps him through it.]

    Summary

Obi-Wan quickly grew frustrated with his mistakes and threw the wood across the room, where it clattered into the wall with great commotion. Instantly, he froze and hunched in on himself.

“Obi-Wan?” Qui-Gon asked, setting down the small wooden bird he had been attempting to carve. “Are you alright?”

“I’m sorry, Master,” Obi-Wan breathed into his knees. “I’m sorry, I won’t do it again, I’m sorry, I just got — got so — I’m sorry.”

Some days, just existing seemed like a task far too daunting to undertake. It was even harder when he had a racing heartbeat, dizzy spells that knocked him out, and shadowy eyes that followed him and infiltrated trusted members of the Temple.

    But he also had Boga.

[or: Obi-Wan knows he is not doing well, but it's a surprise even to him just how poorly off he really is.]

    Summary

The anxiety started early. Perhaps that was why he reacted so strongly when a noise suddenly rang out across the atrium of the Senate lobby. It wasn’t the thunder of an explosion, or the whine of a blastershot, or the crack of a slugthrower firing. But it was close enough, and like a switch had been flipped, Obi-Wan felt a great weight descend over him, muffling everything.

[or: a trip to the Senate goes wrong.]

    Summary

One moment Obi-Wan was running through a battle, lightsaber brandished in front of him like a shield as his feet pounded the earth in rhythm with the thousands of other GAR soldiers on-planet, and then he was crammed into a tight, tiny, quiet space on a different planet entirely.

One moment Obi-Wan was curled in the space between the couch and wall in his quarters, holding desperately onto the soft feathers of Boga’s crest, and the next he was sitting in the middle of an open dirt field as men shouted and blasters fired overhead.

“Initiate,” Master Yoda rasped, looking down at a Human youngling. “Alive, you still are?”

Obi-Wan’s heart skipped a beat as he rushed forward to kneel by the youngling. The girl’s eyes were closed, but as soon as he touched her cheek they sprang open and with a savage yell she leapt at him.

“Wait,” the commander interrupted, and Padmé raised an eyebrow. Cody seemed to be weighing his words carefully. “Are you… close with General Kenobi, ma’am?”

For a split second, she thought he meant in the way that she and Anakin were close and was about to vehemently deny it, but then she came to her senses. “I like to think so, though I’m not always certain he’d agree with me.”

Cody frowned. “That’ll have to be good enough. Follow me.”

    Summary

When the door swooshed open, he half thought he had been pranked or the chime had been malfunctioning, because he could see no one waiting for him on the other side of the entryway. Then a small sniffle drew his attention downward, and there at thigh-level he saw a pair of big blue eyes peering up at him, tears threatening to spill over. The eyes were not disembodied, of course, but attached to the small cherub-like face of a very young humanoid boy.

“Master Jinn?” The boy’s frame trembled just as his voice did. "I — I had a bad dream.”

“We all thought Obi-Wan would have issues with food after going through... food insecurity on Melida/Daan,” Qui-Gon said. That sounded more palatable than the word used in Obi-Wan’s medical files — starvation. “But he seems fine. I think we might have dodged a blaster bolt here.”

Healer Brai stayed silent and just watched him.

The nightmares, when they came, were not a surprise.

When he woke, shaking and sweating, it was not a surprise either.

Then an elbow slammed into his side, right in his broken ribs, and shoved him off onto the ground.

    Summary

“Obi-Wan, is there anything else I or any of the other Healers can do for you?”

He did not say none of your scans and tests revealed the real problem: that Mandalore was the greatest Trial I could imagine. That it feels like I tore my heart in two and only returned with half. That walking the halls of the Temple does not feel like home in the same way it once did. That I feel like a stranger now amongst friends.

Instead, he looked her right in the eyes. “No thank you, Master Vokara Che.”

It was stupid, Obi-Wan knew it was stupid, but he hadn’t been able to help clinging to the thought during the war that once it was over, everything would be better.

But now the war was over, and Obi-Wan felt worse than he had in a long, long time.

Obi-Wan looked back down at Boga. He stretched out his hand a bit, and this time Boga was the one who leaned forward into his touch. He began scratching dutifully, clearly understanding the implicit instruction, and immediately the low rumbling began again.

A slow, small smile crept across his face.

“G-good girl, Boga,” Obi-Wan whispered, so softly that it could barely be heard.

“Hey,” Anakin said softly, kneeling down. “Are you alright, Master?”

    Obi-Wan raised his head and revealed his pale, blotchy face and red-rimmed eyes. “I – I can’t – I can’t do it again, I can’t–”

At his side, Boga let out a soft trill and raised her head to swipe her tongue down the side of Obi-Wan’s face.
