Summary
In 1815, twenty-year-old William Hargrove is a celebrated sea captain, hero of the French navy, beloved by his crew and son of Marseille's respected governor. His star flies high, and he's supported at every turn by his first mate and secret lover Steve Harrington. It seems nothing can bring him down—
—until he's suddenly and unexpectedly accused of treason, and sent without trial to the fearsome Chateau d'If, a nightmarish prison where he faces horrific torture and abuse, and from which there can be no escape. In one stroke, Billy loses his freedom, his reputation, his friends and his position - and he's forced to leave behind his beloved Steve, never to see him again.
The Chateau d'If offers little in the way of hope... but Billy swears that he'll have his vengeance against those who have betrayed him. He'll escape the lonely prison, regain his power and fortune, and reclaim everything he's lost - including Steve.
(AKA the Count of Monte Cristo AU no one asked for!)

Summary
It wasn’t supposed to go this way.
He doesn’t realise he’s said it out loud until Roy says, too loud: “What wasn’t supposed to go this way?”
Jamie just stares at him, mouth opening and closing, and this is - there’s so much he could say. So much he could tell the great Roy Kent about the way things were supposed to be - the way they should have been friends, the things he wanted when he was a kid—
Roy’s mouth - Roy’s mouth is so close to his.
“Nothing,” he says, voice suddenly flat - and turns, and runs away.

A series of moments which are almost something else.

The little girl tilts her small head to one side. “Did you know that owls have three eyelids?”
This seems like a complete non-sequitur to Billy, but her dad rolls with it. “No,” he says. “I didn’t know that.”
Billy takes a tiny step towards him. That voice, again - it can’t possibly be the person Billy thinks it is. And yet—
And yet, Steve Harrington has a very distinctive voice.
