But that's fine, all of it, he is more than capable of being by himself- in the vast emptiness that was a rural Texas night. He doesn't need anyone, certainly not Alex Claremont-Diaz and his insistence that he knows how to keep hookups casual.

June 2023, Italy.
Amongst the orange trees, Henry slowly finds his writer’s soul again. He has been feeling lonely for a while, meaninglessly pursuing a degree that was picked for him, shutting himself away from who he really is and what he really wants. In Pez’s family house on the Amalfi coast, time slows and he can breathe again. Yet, he still feels like something is missing to make him feel complete.
Alex has run away. Asphyxiated by the pressure he has put on himself for years, running without a destination until his legs give way under the unbearable heaviness of his own expectations, he suddenly realizes that he doesn’t know who he is or why he is doing it all. He tries to find solace in the forms of salt water drying on his skin and endless blue washing away the harsh colors of the city. Yet, he still feels like something is missing to make him feel complete.
As dawn washes ancient stones in a golden hue, two boys meet amongst the statues. As dusk sets on the cerulean sea, Alex and Henry find their way to each other’s souls.

“Well,” he gestures with the book still clutched in his hand, its existence and plot enough of an explanation. “Way to ruin your protagonist’s life. Just when I thought he and Helios were getting somewhere.”
Henry groans, which is rude enough to startle him out of the rant that he’d prepared for G. E. James when he’d still been only an abstract concept. The dissonance of it all is brutal – the realisation that as long as they’re talking about the book and not about their past, he’d just been talking to his new favourite author rather than the prince of England.
(Over a year after the fiasco that had been Alex's attempt to get Henry to believe in a future together, they meet again, quite by chance.)

Alex’s throat is dry. “A thousand.”
“Now?” Henry looks terrified. “Or…”
“Within…” Nora glances at June, and Alex is abso-fucking-lutely going to give her shit for her acting later. “A month?”
June nods in agreement. “I think that sounds reasonable.”
Nora clicks her tongue. “If we go by 31 days, that’s 32.26 kisses per day. I think it’s doable, but still a challenge. Perfect for the game.”
“I’ve never experienced a dare that goes outside of the typical gaming period,” Henry says, his shoulder bumping into Alex’s as he curls a knee up to his chest. “How would we even keep track of such a thing?”
Nora directs a devilish, sideways grin at Alex, and the realization hits him like a goddamn freight train.
Henry didn’t say no.

The man at his door is his colleague, Henry Fox, holding a glorious cup of coffee up in the air with one perfectly-shaped eyebrow raised, silently inquiring if he was interested. As if Henry didn’t know he was desperate and would obviously be accepting the necessary caffeinated offering.

And Henry does agree that it'll probably be beneficial for him. He's tired of feeling stuck inside his self-made prison and frustrated that running halfway across the world from his suffocating family didn't magically remove all of his woes.
So he'll run. He'll give it his best shot.
Who knows? Maybe it'll be an enlightening experience.
But Henry doubts it. By the look on his face, David is feeling rather pessimistic about it, too.
But Henry promised he would try, and he keeps his promises. Putting one foot in front of the other when each step feels heavy is something he's already good at.
He may as well try to pick up the pace.

“Henry!” Alex yells and catches Henry’s wrist, stopping him from taking any more steps.
Henry turns back around and lets his eyes drop to where Alex’s fingers round against his pulse point.
“I’m sorry—,” Alex says as he lets go of the wrist. “I’m sorry I snapped.” Alex continues as he starts to pace left to right. “I know y’all are best friends, and I know she loves you and always wants you around. That’s why it’s weird to me that she didn’t tell you her plans.”
He pauses his pacing and pushes one hand through his already unruly curls before he continues. “I just have this gut feeling that something is wrong, that she's gone in some way, and I—" Alex lets out a deep breath as he lifts his stiff shoulders and looks down at the sidewalk. He murmurs, "I don't do well when people leave."
A stillness falls between them, and Alex's heart begins to rush, fearing that Henry will simply turn around and walk away.
“Let’s go find her,” Henry answers.
