Summary
Ilya has no idea what had led to the confrontation, or why, even now, the words hit him like a blow to the gut, the finality of them knocking the air from his lungs like a wave of frigid ocean water. In that moment, Hollander had closed a door between them, forever, and apparently that mattered, because Ilya had gone to bed, angry and alone in a luxury hotel suite, and then he'd woken up in fucking Saskatchewan several years earlier.

Summary
The chime sounded as the elevator arrived. Shane rolled his shoulders back and gave himself one final look in the mirrored surface. His reflection split in two as the doors opened in the center like a hungry mouth about to swallow him whole. Where Shane’s face had stared back at him a split second ago stood Rozanov.
A black hole opened itself in the center of Shane’s torso, dragging his organs, muscles, bones, nerve endings from the furthest points of his body inwards to collapse upon themselves. His brain was static on a muted television. Instructions failed to materialize; he had no plan for this.
Rozanov stared at him, unmoving except for an almost imperceptible hitch in his breath. Time slowed. It had a funny way of doing that around Rozanov.

Summary
"Rozanov?" he says, almost without meaning to. Surely he's mistaken and is about to be told to fuck off. Or, even more alarmingly, he is correct, and then he is certain to be told to fuck off, and possibly punched in the face. The man shifts, eyes drifting from his drink up to Scott and— well, there's no denying it. The captain of the Boston Raiders is drunk in Scott's neighborhood dive bar.
"Fuck," the response is slow, the delayed reaction of molasses spilling out of a jar carelessly knocked over on the kitchen counter. "I must have overdone it. I have summoned the Ghost of Hockey Past."
Scott could just leave. He could turn on a heel, and leave this drunk asshole to discover on his own what consequences are.
Because he's stupid, though, because he's nothing if not a responsible captain even when the drunken idiot in question isn't even one of his own teammates, and yes, because a small part of him can't help but love a good train wreck when he sees one, he sits down instead.
__
Or, Scott Hunter runs into Ilya Rozanov sometime around midnight after a game, and the two saddest, loneliest, most closeted hockey players in New York end up sharing more than they mean to. -

Summary
“We don't even know what this question is. Go on, Haas, I will even let Shane answer first, and when he gives terrible advice, I will tell you the right thing to do.”
To Shane’s horror (and Ilya’s delight), Luca Haas asks for dating advice.

Does it count as catfishing? (Even if neither know) by Nianiika

Summary
“Go get laid, dude.” Hayden had snickered at him while they sat at the bar in the Hotel. The others had laughed at the innocent joke while Shane's face felt like it would explode any second.
And maybe it wouldn’t hurt to have someone to talk to about something else for once. Maybe his obsession with hockey wasn't that healthy after all.
So Shane did the one thing that made the most sense: downloading the first “dating app” that popped up in the App Store to try to meet new people. Preferably people who don’t know who he is.
Or
Shane downloads a dating app and out of every possible person, he matches with none other than Ilya Rozanov.
But neither know who the other person isSeries

Summary
Scent patches were mandatory for anyone participating in World Junior's, but a lot of the Russian guys Shane saw in the hotel or around the rink had them loosely attached to their necks or not quite centered over their scent gland. Shane had been on his way to his parents' car when the wind shifted, and he smelled that Rozanov, leaning against the wall and not-at-all-surreptitiously fishing a carton of cigarettes out of his pocket, must have been one of them.

Summary
“Hello,” Ilya repeats, still kind of stuck on those freckles.
“Hi?” the man says.
“Hi,” Ilya says—again.
Oh god, he's said hello three times now. He should literally say anything else. His name, probably. His phone number, preferably.
“Hi,” Ilya says again, because he can’t help it. “I am—”
“Are you Nick?” the man asks, and it comes out as a breathless sound.
OR: Shane gets stood up on a blind date, and Ilya comes to the rescue, and proceeds to make a series of questionable decisions.

Summary
It is December, and Scott has been out for long enough to pretend to be used to it, and things are not perfect but they’re fucking good, and Ilya Rozanov is at his apartment for dinner—has been for over an hour—and he’s still waiting so stupidly hopefully to introduce a boyfriend who very, very clearly isn’t coming.
(Or: studies on coming out, learning patience, one-sided conversations, and other absurdist waiting games.)
