Because, the thing is, she really likes Ben. Ben makes her feel safe too. But it’s a different kind of safe. It’s safe with an asterisk. A caveat. Safe because he wants something from her, and she’s not sure she’s whole enough to give it, or ever will be, and that it won’t be enough for Ben. Eventually, that safeness will get withdrawn.

“Okay, well, I guess they’re kind of old, so maybe you forgot about them,” Steve says quickly, and Richie knows by his tone of voice that, wherever Steve is, he’s pacing. He takes a deep breath, says, “They’re sex tapes, Richie. Your sex tapes.”
A beat, as Richie’s brow furrows, and he runs that replay.
“What are you talking about? I’ve never done that,” he says, laughing, mildly relieved. “Sure it’s not just a lookalike? Hey, maybe they made a porno parody of one of my movies.” He laughs again at the idea of anyone making a porno out of Camp Hardwood or Santa’s Sack.

“No,” Richie interrupts him. Eddie furrows his brow, his heart pounding again. “I told you, let me finish before you talk, you dipshit.” He shuts his eyes, exhales; Eddie’s terrified. When Richie opens his eyes again, he says, “Eds, I’m in love with you."

What this is— this is regurgitating stuff I got over long ago, things I've moved past. There is no use in dredging any of that up. I don't need this shit messing me up in the head."
And Richie gets it, because he's been back home for less than 24 hours and it’s already been like going through a marathon of a midlife crisis. But he's back, lying here in Derry, with his first and oldest and bestest friend in the world, both of them half paralyzed with fear, trying to bite back the urge to grasp for him across the sheets. Good and bad, old and new.
The one advantage of the clown, Richie thinks, is that at least there's a concrete way to deal with it.
