The realisation hits him in a jarring instant like a splash of cold water. Ilya has been in his position already - with his parents, with Hayden and Jackie. Already had to go through the worry of meeting the people that Shane loves, has felt the weight of it, the fear of getting it wrong. Svetlana, from everything Ilya has said, is one of his most favourite people in the world. One of the few people he has left, really. And Shane has to, has to , give a good impression.

The dangerous thing is he could get used to this. Wilhelm is sort of glowing, is ironically almost like a prince charming, making Linda smile and laugh, thanks her for the delicious food and offers to place the plates away and clean. Simon can practically hear what she’ll say tomorrow evening: ‘oh, isn’t that boy such a gentleman’. And maybe she’ll wiggle her eyebrows and Simon will playfully roll his eyes and say ‘no mamá, it isn’t like that. we’re just friends’. Or maybe she won’t wiggle her eyebrows and insinuate anything because why would a prince, who can ask for everything, who can be limitless with his desires, want a boy who has nothing to offer.

Sometimes the differences between Simon and Hillerska rage at him, red and bold and unforgivable. He’s learned when to keep quiet, when not to try, when the boy from the local town isn’t someone worth listening to.

The two little words hit Ilya in the chest like a ton of bricks. He freezes, trapped just over the threshold of the house that’s started to feel uncomfortably close to home. Or not home really, not heavy with expectations he can never quite meet, but real – safe – the way he imagines a home is supposed to feel.
“Ilya?” Yuna’s voice is gentle, but there’s a question there, something unsure, teetering on the edge of concern.
And Ilya is aware, vaguely, that there is absolutely no reason for it to be quite so hard to breathe right now. He’s been here before. He has stood in this doorway about a thousand times now as Yuna Hollander shouted her love after Shane with the uncomplicated ease of someone who has said the words a million times and knows, with unquestionable, unconditional certainty, that she will say them over and over again until the end of time.
It's just – Shane isn’t there.or Ilya and his not at all complicated relationship with the words, “I love you.”

Johnny: Hello, everyone, and welcome to the 2021 season opener for the Ottawa Centaurs! I’m Jonny Bernard here with Martin Thomas, and we’re so glad it’s hockey season again.
Mark: Indeed, we are Johnny. Especially when it comes to this team.
Johnny: Absolutely. So many have been waiting for the so-called Gayest Team in Hockey to take to the ice for the first time.
Mark: A mantle they proudly wear, and for good reason. When you have Shane Hollander, Ilya Rozanov, and Troy Barrett on your team, being queer might just be a superpower.
Johnny: Do you think we’ll see a Hollander/Rozanov appearance on the Kiss Cam tonight?

Shane’s eyes snap open. Wait a second.
“Ilya,” Shane says, propping himself up on his elbows. “Ilya, wake up.”
Ilya makes a pained noise, eyes still shut. “I shut curtains already.”
“It’s not that. Ilya, hey. Don’t go back to sleep.” Ilya tries to bury back into Shane’s chest, but adrenaline knifes through Shane’s hangover long enough for him to peel Ilya off and roll him into his back. Ilya blinks blearily up at him, starfished in the sheets. Beautiful and naked and missing his mother’s cross.
OR: When Ilya’s cross goes missing after the Centaurs celebrate their first Stanley Cup win, Shane is determined to get it back. And so are the Centaurs. And the rest of Ottawa.

Summary
This was what tended to scare Shane the most, when Ilya was unwell: the gradual loss of him, despite being physically there. He would go quiet, blank, slow to speak and slow to respond, nothing like the pulse of intense energy and liveliness that sparked in him at his baseline. Shane missed him, when he was away in that place. It was not a place Ilya could always describe, and it was not somewhere Shane could rescue him from, or even join him in for company. So Shane waited, every time, for him to come back. He always came back. That was the only relief in it.
