Summary
It’s there, suffocating under the golden hues of the morning sun, that Arthur first experienced what it must feel like to truly believe in something.
-----
Sometimes, he’d hear someone wax poetic about their faith. [..]They’d all told him about the same - that one day they just knew. They looked around at the world around them and found miracles and intention. Realized that surely, something or someone had to be the cause. Surely, there was a point to this. There was meaning.
Arthur had never understood it. He’d never needed faith. Never needed blind obedience, or trust in some entity he could not see much less touch. Did not experience that Knowing.
Merlin knelt beside him, chin up and hands low, and yet Arthur felt like the one who was praying. Felt the buzz at the center of his chest; the twitch of his hands at the need to - to say something. Do something. Let that Knowing escape him like a hymn.

Summary
“Please fire me,” Merlin laughs. “I dare you to sack me for longer than two days.”
“You don’t think I can make it two days without you?” The idea is absurd. As if he needs Merlin of all people.
“You haven’t yet.”
. .
Or: Arthur doesn’t know what the point of his manservant is. (Until, of course, he does.

Summary
Arthur feels like he’s standing on a precipice without knowing how he got here. He swallows. “He—”
“—damned himself. So you’ve said.”
They stare at each other, and the distance between them seems to be growing in leaps and bounds. Arthur can’t remember the last time he felt so estranged from Merlin, not during the whole disaster with Caerleon, or when Merlin disappeared. Not even when—
“Then I’ve damned myself as well.”
Without intending to, Arthur pushes Merlin just one step too far. Now he's left without his manservant but a hundred questions, a world of hurt, and guilt that clings to him like a shadow. Well, and a notebook filled with drawings because apparently, Merlin can draw on top of being a sorcerer. No matter how often Arthur tells himself that he just wants to forget, he can't help but come back to the collection of sketches and notes, a chronicle of all that Merlin has done.
Maybe their story isn't quite over yet.
