He should have considered this, should have thought it through more.
Sam figured maybe if he had taken the rat thing on his own, maybe if it was just himself who fed it to the maw in the wall, that it wouldn’t be so hard on anyone else. He didn’t want the others to get hurt, didn’t want them to have to watch this either, especially Hellen who tried all she could to grow closer to the little beast.

“Mr.Sam,” Joel asks him out of the blue during breakfast, “Why is everything you make so gross?”
Upon the abrupt insult, Sam nearly spits out the runny eggs he barely managed to put together, punching his chest as he choked on his terrible breakfast. “What?” he manages to cough out.
“Well… hhhh… It’s just my mom used to make super awesome pancakes!” Joel says with a smile… though, it’s hard to tell if it’s an actual smile or just his face. “I know we don’t have a lot of food… But these eggs taste really… hhhh… bad.”

A series of events in which Sam learns to cook, and gains a family on the way. Because when you're in the midst of the apocalypse, getting your kids McDonald's isn't exactly a feasible option.
