Summary
It starts—as most things on the Zephyr do—as a drunken bit.
“Gotch.” Van says solemnly. Her flesh hand shoots out to grip his shoulder tightly. Her eyes burn into his skull. “I’m gonna be your dad.”
Maxwell blinks. “What?”
“Your father is an absolute arse, and if he doesn’t want you, I call dibs. I’m your new da.”
Or: Longspot Gotch sucks. Van, ever the problem-solver, steps up.

Summary
Maxwell felt…strange.
Not bad, necessarily. As far as he could tell, he wasn’t in any pain. But he didn’t feel particularly good, either.
Mostly he just felt a whole lot of…nothing.
That in itself wasn’t strange. Maxwell would be remiss to call himself an emotional man. He was a passionate one, however, and typically this time after a fight would be spent mentally going over each second of battle, relishing in the spiderwebs of pain that still stretched over his cracked knuckles.
But now? Now he wasn’t even positive that the hands he was looking at belonged to him.
It was all just very…strange.
Or: Maxwell (doesn't) deal with his newfound bloodlust. Van helps.

Summary
Van Chapman was pretty sure she had the Gotch kid figured out--stick up his arse, fancy clothes, and an air of superiority that was distinctly out of place on an airship.
And then he flew past her as he launched himself off the ship.
And then, after punching two pilots out of the sky, jumped back as if nothing had happened, as if he wasn’t covered in blood, and as if his gloves weren't bitten off to reveal heavily scarred knuckles.
Van Chapman prided herself on not being easily shaken, and she wasn’t. It was just—surprising.
She didn’t really know this kid at all.
Or: Snapshots of Van and Maxwell bonding, punching, and healing. Mostly punching.

Summary
Ruby Sunday isn’t a genius, but she does know some things.
She knows, even though he’s never said it, that the Doctor is painfully, desperately lonely. And she knows that when he danced with Rogue, the haunted look in his eyes went away for just a moment in a way it never has with her.
And she knows that for all her best efforts, she has never been somebody that anybody needed.
TLDR: Ruby assumes the Doctor needs Rogue more than he needs her and makes an executive decision that nobody likes.

Summary
He is a Gotch after all and Gotches are never rowdy, never violent, never imperfect.
And so, Maxwell Gotch is used to existing on the outside.
It is the same with the crew of the Zephyr, with old friends who adopted Olethra as ‘the kid' immediately, as the perfect little member of their crew. But Maxwell wasn't rowdy enough. Far too rowdy for his family, but not enough for the Wind Riders.
But that was fine.
Maxwell has been content with his lonely existence for twenty-nine years, why should that change now?In which Maxwell Gotch finds a family and falls in love.

Summary
By the time the ambulance pulled away with the patient, the crew was sliding tools back into their compartments. Ravi moved slower, dropping every second item. Every motion was like fighting through molasses. His breaths were running shallow now, his chest rising and falling too fast for someone who was apparently fine.
“Ravi,” Bobby called, tone laced with concern.
Ravi moved, opening his mouth to say the same phrase again, but the words failed. His knees buckled, the world moving in slow motion, and before anyone could catch him, he crumpled to the asphalt with a dull thud.
--
Or always pulling double shifts is finally catching up to Ravi.

Summary
Hunter cracked the window open and laid on top of his sheets, it felt hotter in his room than normal. He ignored it, he would feel better tomorrow. Tomorrow, all of this would have been a mild cold, one that would go unnoticed by everyone but him.
Of course Hunter shouldn't have thought himself so lucky.
