He has never argued with a punishment, not since he was a toddler, if then. He needs that food, needs to be able to eat enough if he wants to be Robin.
He’s been hungry before, but back then, it never mattered if he was a little weak or dizzy. It never risked his life or the life of his partner when he was a kid.
She turns, sighing softly and pursing her lips. She reaches out to pat his cheek, and for a moment his heart soars hopefully, and he barely restrains himself from leaning into the rare bit of contact and soaking up his mother’s touch. “Oh, Timothy,” she tuts. “This is for the best. And honestly, I think it’s wise for you to cut down a bit on the snacks. I’d hate to have to listen to anyone tittering at the next gala that you’re getting chubby.”
And without another backwards glance, she turns and heads upstairs, leaving Tim alone and frozen at the bottom of the steps.

He looked up at her, and an uncharacteristic softness settled over his features. He took a deep breath through his nose and scanned the face of the young woman in front of him. "What the hell do the Fireflies want with you?"
The earnestness startled her momentarily, and she lifted the cigarette to her lips to calm her nerves back down.
"I wouldn't worry about it, man," she finally responded. She broke his gaze and returned to the coffee table to drop her cigarette butt into the empty peach can. She laid back down on the couch and massaged her temples.

The events of TLOU if Ellie had aged out of military school before Marlene found out about her immunity. Joel and Tess are hired to smuggle a 19 year old Ellie out of Boston, after she's already been hiding her immunity for five years.
TL;DR: TLOU1 but with a TLOU2 aged Ellie, because I'm in love with the potential for that dynamic.

She was shivering, and it had nothing to do with the cold. Joel held her close to his side as he led her through the deep snow, his coat tucked around her as tightly as it could be, but he could still feel her trembling and hear the faint whimpers accompanying her every breath. At this point she was leaning most of her weight on him, barely raising her feet as she shuffled through the snow, and he was starting to consider just scooping her up in his arms and carrying her, his injury be damned. His arm instinctively tightened around her shoulders at the thought she could simply drop at any given moment, her knees buckling under her.
He didn't even want to think about what might have happened to her.

He doesn’t notice that one of her shoes is untied until a lace gets caught in a notch of a log as they pass, sending her down hard.
The momentum of her fall sends him thudding against a tree, and his eyes slam shut as he grits his teeth against the white hot pain that flares in his side.
When he opens his eyes, she’s facedown in the snow, still and silent, hands still at her sides making it clear that she didn’t even try to catch herself.
It speaks of so much trauma, so much unresponsiveness, that he feels tears sting his eyes at the sheer scale of what’s happened to her, of how small and useless he is to fix any of it, of how much he’s let her be hurt by his own failure to protect her.
But there’s no time for his own self-loathing.
She needs him, insufficient as he is.

It’s not that Ellie means to stalk the couple she catches lurking in the shadows at 1 in the morning after sneaking out of her dorm because sitting in the room alone was making it hard to breathe, but fellow curfew-breakers can hardly expect privacy. All’s fair in love and rule-breaking or whatever their English teacher said in one of the rare classes when they were learning something not related to FEDRA policy.
And there’s something in the way the man holds his hand out to help pull the woman up over a crumbled brick wall that she just can’t look away from.
There’s a gentleness there despite his size and obvious strength that makes her breath catch for just a second. It’s too far for her to hear what they’re saying, but the woman says something with a little half-smile and presses her hand to the man’s shoulder, and the casual affection of the gesture fills her with a nameless want.
So, trailing them at a distance it is.
(AU in which Ellie follows Joel and Tess around and meets them with no Fireflies involved)

Joel found out just how bad at cooking Ellie is when he made the mistake of allowing her to heat up a can of beans on her own. How she managed to burn herself and leave the food colder than it was when he handed it to her, he’ll never know. But, as it turns out, she’s pretty damn good at all the stuff that doesn’t require heat.
She measures out the spices with such precision her hands start to shake, she rolls the meatballs like she’s afraid of scaring them, and she honest-to-God squeals when he lets her crush up the tomatoes with her bare hands. She’s just such a kid. It all makes his chest ache a little.
“This is the best day of my life,” she breathes, watching reverently as Joel strains the spaghetti.
He realizes as she scoops makeshift pasta sauce onto her plate that it actually might be. It startles him just enough for the familiar feeling he’d buried so long ago to start clawing its way out of its grave.

Summary
Ellie had worked hospice rotation in FEDRA school. All the orphans had to. It was a shit job, literally: changing adult cloth diapers and sponging down injured who were either too sick or old to care for themselves.
Fedra couldn’t pay civilians enough to see the ugly end of life that they had coming for them, like staring down the barrel of a gun. Instead the orphans did the heavy lifting, looking down at the elderly and injured like strange artifacts from a time when society had the resources to take care of people who didn’t contribute.
She never thought any of it would come in handy, until Joel’s lying on a bare mattress in an abandoned house and he won’t be moving under his own power for days on end.
