Summary
When Alatus is very young, he hears a story about a boy who flew too close to the sun. It is not quite a story from Fontaine, but rather an older, dead nation that existed before Fontaine was a glimmer in anybody's mind - but to call it a story from Fontaine is closest to what modern inhabitants of the hydro archon's region would understand.
Regardless, he heeds the story's warnings well. In his abundance of caution, he flies low and tastes the salt of the sea spray on his tongue as his fingertips trail through the white-capped waves.
As many birds that fly too close to the water are, one day Alatus is snapped up.

Back in a younger, more naive time, a god had gotten a hold of Xiao's weakness and forced him to serve as their bloodhound. Many died at his hand but as much as it pained him, he was helpless to resist.
Rex Lapis liberated the yaksha and gave him the name "Xiao."
"In the fables of another world, the name Xiao is that of a spirit who encountered great suffering and hardship. He endured much suffering, as you have. Use this name from now on.”

Kaeya chuckles, not bothering to look at Diluc. “Yes, you are.”
“I don’t even care enough to bother trying to fight with you.”
“You’re always trying to fight,” Kaeya tells him, and does not elaborate.
It’s not true. Like usual, Kaeya’s just talking out of his ass. Diluc is perfectly level-headed. Diluc is perfectly under control. Kaeya’s the one who needs to reign it in, who needs to get himself together, and Diluc would tell him exactly that—if he was looking for a fight. Which he is not.

When a simple mission in Dragonspine goes south and leaves Kaeya injured, it falls on Diluc to get both of them back home in one piece. If he manages not to murder Kaeya himself, of course.

“Ah, you look so beautiful like this, Xiao,” Barbatos – Venti in this form, though Xiao has never been able to look at the Anemo Archon and see anyone other than simply Barbatos, the god who found him so long ago – “Alatus, Xiao, my precious little songbird…”
Each word is punctuated by a kiss down his body, laid bare at the base of the enormous tree at Windrise, beneath a statue of the very Archon who worships him as though he himself is divine. Anyone could see him here, if it weren’t for the barrier of Anemo that Barbatos has built around them, keeping him safe and secure in a way he only ever feels around the Anemo Archon and few others.
It is not a contract that keeps them together, and though it baffles Xiao, he will greedily accept whatever Barbatos will give him.

Sometimes the nights are longer than usual for Diluc and Charles, on the nights where Venti visits the Angel Share the two have their hands full. Between the bard and his wine, and the customers that the songs of a drunken bard bring in. The music, the dancing and the drinking would go well into the early morning hours and each time Diluc would find Venti curled up in the back corner of the second floor, usually passed out and mumbling about something that happened hundreds of years ago and other times he would be splayed out over the bar, wine glass in hand as he giggled himself into a stupor as he tried to tell Diluc some story about old monstadt and his life before he was a god.
