Three days after his mum goes home, Avery gets sick.
This is, objectively, a minor event. People get sick. It happens. Derek knows this. Derek has, in point of fact, access to a comprehensive working knowledge of human immune response, viral transmission vectors, and the general trajectory of a common respiratory illness, all of which indicates that this is not serious and will resolve itself within five to seven days with rest and fluids.
Derek knows all of this.
Derek is not handling it.
(Avery keeps saying he's fine. He is doing the dishes while saying he's fine. He is refolding the blanket on the couch while saying he's fine. He is reaching for the mop while saying he's fine and Derek is standing in the kitchen doorway watching this and experiencing something in the vicinity of his sternum that he does not have a precise word for but which rhymes with heartbreak.
Fies is sitting on the sick person. This is not useful. This is, in fact, the opposite of useful. Derek has told her this. She has not moved.)Series

Avery saw the beauty of the universe in the duration of a millisecond. Not nearly the knowledge of infinity, only the pieces that slipped through the cracks. But it was enough to know the expanse of the world.

Avery’s been roaming so many empty, vast fields that he can’t remember the last time he’s seen a house. Or, another person for that fact. It’s been getting lonely, and unbearably so. He wants a friend- someone to talk to, to hang out with, to have a conversation with. All he’s been doing for months after retiring from tournaments is traveling with his horse, searching for ‘a world’ as he stated vaguely in an interview, although he doesn’t know if that exists anymore. He doesn’t even know what he meant in that interview, he has no idea.
This all changes when the slime meets a strange, tall knight in the fields. And Avery’s determined to be his friend.

It was a craving so deep and uncontrollable it made him and Dream become one.
