Jayce was a man of sacrifice, Viktor had noticed quickly. Since that first spark in the ruins of Jayce’s apartment, long stripped of the evidence of Jayce’s illicit, half-formed ‘science’, when Jayce proudly placed a large, warm hand on Viktor’s shoulder and declared his dream /theirs/ like it was breathing, Viktor had known Jayce gave freely, and far too easy.

Jayce dies protecting Viktor in the Council attack. Viktor goes hexcrazy.

Viktor smiled knowingly. "I have that thought often, myself. If you had asked me a year ago I would have said such a thing was impossible in the undercity, at least in our lifetimes." Viktor turned to meet his eyes. "But when there's magic, why would there not also be miracles?"

Summary

When Viktor finally asks why Jayce stayed behind inside the Anomaly with him, Jayce stares at him as though he’s supremely disappointed by the question— as if Viktor has betrayed his own brilliance by asking something so irredeemably stupid. “How could I not? We’re partners.”
Partners, Jayce calls them. Not for the first time, Viktor wonders: Partners in what?

Or: Jayce and Viktor survive the Hexcore, a blizzard, their own bodies, sharing a bed and all the things they’re too afraid to say. Slowly, they put themselves back together— piece by stubborn piece.
