“Kaveh,” he managed to choke out, voice wrecked, and Kaveh looked back up at his face, red eyes wild with fright. “’m sorry,” he murmured, weak, and Kaveh inhaled, reaching up to steady Alhaitham’s left shoulder.
Oh, Alhaitham was pitching sideways. His head felt like it was too heavy, lolling to the side, and Kaveh was speaking louder then, faster, but colours were dancing nauseatingly in Alhaitham’s vision, and his extremities were beginning to tingle and go numb. He shivered, involuntarily, coming to the realisation that he was freezing cold, and Kaveh’s hand cupped his cheek, words slurring together in a loud and frantic mess.Alhaitham comes home in the early hours of the morning, bleeding in his desire for Kaveh.

Kaveh’s brain short circuits. “What?” He asks.
“I just so happened to have a couple of vacation days saved up. Fontaine has an extensive literature catalog, so I figured it wouldn’t hurt to take a trip.”
What. “I don’t— What are you talking about?”

Kaveh sighs again, and this time his features knit together and he squeezes his eyes shut. “Can you stop being clinical for two minutes and hear what I’m actually asking you?”
“I am listening.” It’s true. “And I do understand.”
“Do you, now?”
“I do.”
Kaveh pinches the bridge of his nose. The frustration there isn’t feigned or overblown—it’s real, deep in the lines of his face and the tension drawing his shoulders. “I’d want you to be here,” he says again, but quieter.
“I will be here,” Alhaitham answers. “And it’ll be with the cure.”
When an expedition gone wrong leaves Kaveh with three days to live, Alhaitham and Cyno fight to find the cure while Tighnari fights to buy them time.

Loud, chaotic, dirty. Everything that went against Al-Haitham’s standards.
“Working here as what?” Kaveh blinked. “Like admin or something? That’s probably quiet and far enough from kids for you. Though—”
“No,” interrupted Al-Haitham. “I don’t.”
After getting fired from a prestigious architecture firm, Kaveh moves back to his hometown to raise his five-year-old brother only to find that an old college "acquaintance" is his little brother's kindergarten teacher.

Al-Haitham stared at him incredulously. “You want my unrequited love flowers?”
“Yes?” Kaveh flushed red. “Since…since you’re not using them.”
Since you’re not using them—
“What the hell would I be using them for? What the hell are you using them for?”
Al-Haitham has Hanahaki disease and coughs up mourning flowers. Kaveh asks if he can use them for his ascension materials.

“Well Alhaitham,” Kaveh said with considerable sarcasm. “I wish you the best of luck with your studies. And your social life. Kusanali only knows how much help you need with that.” He then made his way back to his other group, immediately smiling upon return.
And with that, Alhaitham blissfully continued his study with the addition of his soundproof earpieces to conceal what was quite possibly the most deafening voice he had ever heard.
He should have known from this conversation alone that the blond was akin to a tumultuous sound: blocking out everything else in its vicinity, until it was all anyone could focus on. Until Kaveh was all anyone could focus on. Anyone being Alhaitham, of course.

Summary

As if this wasn’t enough, where Kaveh’s team planned to build, a Leyline has formed. Kaveh knew from the start the Leyline would be trouble, but he didn’t expect it to be the kind of trouble to send him back in time.
Here in the past, Kaveh is a student at the Akademiya again. A time where he isn’t in debt nor suffocated by workload. A time where Alhaitham still looks at him like he would trade in the world for his safety. Kaveh swears to himself to seize this second chance, but Alhaitham catches on quickly that there is something odd about his Senior…

There’s a long moment of silence. The aching swell of Vivaldi in the background and the rushing in his ears like the ocean waves.
“...Kaveh?”
Kaveh, globally-renowned musician, disappears off the face of Teyvat. Five years later, he shows up outside of Al-Haitham's door with no explanation but to ask for a bed to sleep in.
It's fine. They only have thirteen years of history, after all.

this is my contribution to ratiorine/aventio/golden ratio fandom
This is modern au with academia vibe, Ratio is studying math at uni and meets a guy who he barely knows be he strikes his interest (which happens very rarely) and before he knows, he is a part of a bigger game. They will get closer throughout the chapters, revealing Aventurine's past (that I'm gladly making up as I go to make him very angsty) and issues everyone struggle with nowadays. I'm trying to be funny sometimes but it will probably be mostly hurt/comfort and angst.
