Aventurine pulled it out and noted first how close to the arrival time it was, second that his battery was getting low, and then finally that he had a number of notifications mostly from Ratio.
It looked as though he had triple texted him which was… uncharacteristic. That also made it quite alarming.
Ratio: I am at the station. (2:14pm)
Ratio: When you arrive, may I kiss you? (2:16pm)—

“Ah,” She sighed, tipping her head back to look at the sky. Veritas studied the pale column of her throat. Her voice fell into a sing-song cadence when she answered again. “I already did. That is to say I got all dolled up to dump my good-for-nothing ex.”
Veritas blinked. She certainly wasn't expecting that. “Really?”
“Really.” She nodded. “But now that gives me time to celebrate your birthday.”

Ratio let his phone buzz once, then twice, before picking up with a heavy sigh. He did not have a chance to give a proper greeting before Jade immediately began explaining the situation. Aventurine was sick, apparently. He needed to be monitored. He would refuse care from anyone else. That was the gist of it, at least.
After all this time in their partnership raving on about his good health—“Why, I don't get hangovers, Ratio.”, “Food pyramid? Isn't that just IPC propaganda, Ratio?”, “Honestly, a few pain pills will do the trick, Ratio.”—well, the doctor couldn't help but feel a bit vindicated over his neglected advice. He was not one to say 'I told you so', he was raised better than that, but in this moment it was a near thing.

Or worse—knowing exactly how.
A mission takes an unexpected turn when Ratio unknowingly ingests a drink laced with remnants of the Propagation. Fearing he might lose control and hurt Aventurine, he locks himself away to ride it out alone. It’s up to Aventurine to coax him back out—but that’s easier said than done when he can’t bring himself to admit his feelings for the one person he can’t afford to lose.

Phainon practically choked on air. “What? No! Absolutely not! I just—you—I didn’t expect…”
“Didn’t expect me to like men?”
Or: Phainon realizes he's gay, and then realizes he's been in love with Mydei all along.

When Aventurine adds an event to Ratio's calendar titled "Sexual Intercourse with Senior Manager Aventurine", he expects an angry text—maybe, a phone call if the doctor is feeling particularly zesty. What he does not expect is for Ratio to show up at his door, right on time, fully intending to make good on their appointment.
Or: Aventurine fucks around and gets fucked. Not a single lesson is learned.

Summary
They’re deep in the ever night beyond Okhema when Mydei notices the subtle change in Phainon’s scent. Phainon has always smelled pleasant enough, aside from the disgusting musk that comes with him being another alpha, but now that musk is more pungent and the other notes more subdued.
“Deliverer,” Mydei says. Growls, really. He’s already annoyed. Phainon should’ve done this math before they left, and now they’re both about to be horribly inconvenienced. “Why are you going into rut?”
When Phainon's ruined suppressants cause him to go into rut unexpectedly, Mydei helps him through it.
