Summary
It had been 35 hours. 35 hours, and he wasn't sure how he was supposed to work tomorrow. The exhaustion had grown into a mind-numbing daze, a fuzzy clutter like the static noise of an old TV. Maybe he'd call in sick, he supposed. He had never had to do that before; he'd never even taken any of his vacation time, because he'd never quite been sure what he was meant to do with it. But now, yes, he'd have to call in sick. Take the week off, see how bad this little experiment of his could get. Anything to not go to sleep again. Anything to escape the nightmares.

In an episode of self-imposed sleep deprevation, Edward Nashton has a revelation.

Summary
He loses his virginity to an older man with a pale circle around his ring finger. The man isn't especially attractive or interesting, but he looks at Edward with a sort of starved desperation that might befit a penniless beggar at the window of an expensive bakery. Edward can't get enough of that look, of the clammy, covetous touches, of the groaned praise. Of being looked at like he's something miraculous, something beautiful, something good. There are a lot of pathetic middle-aged men after that. Edward doesn't let himself reflect on it.
He's fine. It's fine. He's surviving.

Summary
He's coming unbound, and it feels freeing.
He's spent his career shackled to convention, to contemporary wisdom, to "scientific ethics".
They are chains he'd been afraid to break, a self-enforced prison of mediocrity. The only thing that kept him chained had been fear – fear of losing his career, his livelihood, all that he'd worked for…
Jonathan Crane wasn't afraid of that anymore.Truthfully, he doesn't even feel like Jonathan Crane anymore.

Summary
Jervis was terrified that he'd float away.
Jonathan had asked him what that meant, once, and Jervis couldn't explain it. He had tried to find the words, but they came out as just another nonsensical string of rhymes.
After that, Jonathan gave up on asking. Instead, he would simply sit down next to Jervis, and let Jervis hold his hand.

Summary
When Jervis Tetch looked at him, Jonathan felt as if the man saw right through him. The hypnotist’s gaze was heavy and piercing, and it felt like it laid Jonathan bare, exposing all the weak, shameful, hidden parts of his psyche. Jonathan hated it. Jonathan yearned for it.

Summary
Rust — Rust a fool — allows himself to imagine a world in which he turns. A world in which they solve this together, they grind it out and start thinking, really thinking, pavements and hard man-hours, answer to nobody but themselves, they solve it. Marty turns. Let this be that world — it’s the world of shit-all else, it’s the world where Rust wakes up wishing he hadn’t every fucking morning, the world in which he knows the sound a child’s bones, still soft, make under the wheels of an ‘84 Mercedes 230CE — let him have this, just this. Only this.
Marty doesn’t turn. Marty mutters under his breath, “Sanctimonious prick,” and Marty leaves.
They arrest Rust twenty-one days later.

Summary
If they didn’t want him drunk at work, Marty reasoned, swirling the glass and watching the whiskey cling to the sides in that way that always put him in the mindset of maple syrup—of Saturday mornings when his father got out early for work and it was just him, his mom, pancakes on the stovetop and the sun turning the crummy kitchen linoleum gold—if they didn’t want him drunk at work, they shouldn’t have had him at a bar.
===
It's the early '90s. Marty is (mildly) undercover, investigating a case and pounding whiskey and panicking about the steady, settled, regular-type life he swears he wants. Rust is (deep) undercover and wondering if he remembers what it is to want. By chance, they meet.
