No matter how hard he tried, Sebastian couldn't pinpoint the moment he'd fallen in love with Sam. It came over him slowly, like the changing of seasons. One day you're wearing a t-shirt while your best friend drags you to yet another beach party, the next you notice the leaves are falling, and a faint scent of cinnamon lingers in the air whenever you pass the Saloon. For Sebastian, falling in love was like that: one day he and Sam were playing video games in his basement bedroom, the next, the sparkle in Sam's eyes when he won the latest round of Plumber Kart made his heart skip a beat.
But he never said anything, of course.

He remembered the feeling of lingering relief, the sickly sweet taste of the energy drink they’d shared, the way the TV screen had illuminated Sam’s face. His teasing smile when he managed to beat Sebastian, the blue nail polish on his fingernails, the freckles on his cheeks, and his green eyes.
Sebastian couldn’t look away.
It all came crashing down on him like a particularly brutal wave, one that would’ve knocked Sam instantly off his surfboard. The reason for why he’d been so jealous of Penny. The reason why he’d always been so drawn to Sam, so captivated by him. The reason why the mental image of being together with Abigail had appalled him so much.
