Henry places three fingers just below his navel, the soft fabric of his jumper caught between the pads of his fingertips and the sensitive skin of his belly as he presses gently.
“What am I supposed to do with you?” Henry whispers despite himself, a sense of dread and sudden burst of affection bleeding through his quiet voice, making it shiver.
“You’re as stubborn as your father. . .” Henry goes on to say, his throat tightening as he confronts the truth, little by little. “You weren’t supposed to be.”

Summary
Henry's breath catches in his throat as he sees the flash of raw, unwavering devotion in Alex’s eyes.
In another world, he would have done everything to be at the receiving end of it. . . Here and now, however, it terrifies him. He lets go of Alex’s hands as the man lies back down.
“And because of this handsome peasant boy, the prince’s armor began to fall away. Piece by piece. Until all that was left was the piece of armor protecting his heart. Peasant boy pulled and pulled at this last piece of armor. But the prince held it firmly in place.”
He looks at the shifting flames before him now, and every blaze eats at the tinder and wood at its hearth. It’s becoming more apparent now, this thing that he has been avoiding since the start of this affair. The passion between them could easily devour everything at stake in their lives. But Alex isn’t the type to douse water on the flames—that’s just not his nature.
It will be up to Henry to do the deed.

Summary
Alex stirs. Henry trails his hand down Alex's chest, nuzzles into his neck. A low, soft noise escapes Alex's mouth; he pushes back against Henry's hips, and Henry echoes it with a noise of his own. His mind is slowly awakening, catching up to the instinctual responses of his body. His eyes cast over the two of them, tangled up under the blankets and bathed in light.
Suddenly, all the implications of what the bright sunlight means—shades thrown wide open, snipers on top of buildings, long-range lenses shooting them in their most private moments—sends icy bullets through his chest.
Several years later, Henry is still working through the trauma of their forced outing. Alex helps him.

Alex and Henry have been in a secret relationship for two years (coming up on their third) when the news breaks: Prince Henry has fallen severely ill and the royal family asks for privacy and prayers from the public while he recuperates in a private hospital.
