When Vash woke, it was with someone else cradled in his arms. That wasn't unheard of. It happened, sometimes, with the drinking.
So he supposed this was another of those mornings – that he would extract himself from bed as carefully as possible so as not to wake his partner, collect his things, leave them a glass of water and a note, and make his way back to his own room to go through his usual workout. Maybe find himself some breakfast before he met up with Wolfwood. Normal stuff.
Except when he opened his eyes to take in his surroundings and plot his escape, he was hit by one terrible, unconscionable revelation.
The person in his arms was Meryl.

It's nothing, really. A graze on the shoulder of his left arm from their daily allotted shootout, barely even deep enough to draw blood. Something that even Wolfwood hadn’t fussed over. He’d simply checked it once, stuck a colorful band-aid on top, handed him a lollipop with a sarcastic comment about being a good patient, and called it a day. If even Wolfwood wasn't worried about it, then Vash was happy to forget about it and move onto the next town.
So, they had.

He was so close to her and the warmth of the coat wasn’t helping her now as she stumbled back a bit, laughing nervously. “Aren’t you cold now?”, she carefully pulled the coat up, scared that it would drag against the ground as she walked. “I’ll be fine.”, he said and there was the soft tone in his voice again, which she could hear distinctively whenever he felt like he was truly doing something good.

Meryl was aware that her crush on Vash was futile. She just didn't think that him giving her his coat on one cold night would turn into something this beautiful, yet complicated between her, Vash and Wolfwood.
