Vash accidentally oversteps Meryl's boundaries about physical touch when he tries to care for her following a bad sunburn. Her own mentor was highly respected, so while he was alive, Meryl was able to coast off the respect garnered from being associated with him. There are enough sounds—quiet ones, because she can tell he's trying to keep the noise down, compared to his usual—she can't make out that she has to know what the hell's going on. Her limbs feel like lead by now, but she manages to lift an edge of the compress and crack an eye barely open to get a look. Wolfwood has moved one of the room's chairs to a few feet away from her bedside. His heels are propped on the edge of the bed; he's got the paper resting in his lap.
He's staying.
With Vash and Milly out of town on a job, Meryl is forced to rely on the one person she never wants to when she falls ill with a migraine: Wolfwood.

It'd be just as easy, too, to trail outside after Milly. To squint into the guts of their truck together, to lean against the sunbaked warmth of her arm, oil-flecked and sticky with sweat. Downstairs, she can hear a rattle of activity. Vash must've thought of her plan to bug Wolfwood first—her ears perk against the sound of his laugh, the rising volume of Wolfwood's curses. Meryl takes a deep breath and closes the bedroom door. Locks it for good measure.

“I dunno, but definitely a fucking lot more than Wolfwood, make sure to tell him I win this round,” she said, booping Vash’s nose.
