Ami’s dad left her when she was a kid.
Her mother is very critical of her, she always has something to say, something Ami could be doing better at.
She acts like she doesn't care.
But lately, she’s been caring more than she likes to admit.
After witnessing a father scolding/disciplining his daughter, Ami wonders why her dad didn’t love her enough to stick around and do the same.
Aizawa notices and refuses to let his student believe she’s unloveable.

Monoma takes his bullying of Class A too far and Vlad King has enough. Monoma is sentenced to staying in Class A until he shapes up. But Vlad King, Class A, and Class B all discover a few things they didn’t know about Monoma.
Or: Monoma's mother expects perfection from him and loves conditionally and is overall an emotionally-abusive parent (though Monoma doesn't realize it and strives to please her). As a result Monoma goes overboard in showing off and being arrogant because he is terrified that if he fails too much his teacher and classmates won't care about him anymore either.

Summary
Really, there were a variety of reasons why Alexander kept a knife next to his bed.
Not long ago, there had been a time when the shadows in the corner of his room had grown faces, and stood over him, manifesting into something sinister and solid the second that he turned to face the wall. The knife helped, just a little.
Or when he’d lay awake, straining his ears for the slightest creak that could mean footsteps in the silent house, too terrified of danger to sleep. Too terrified of being vulnerable.
Despite the array of explanations that Alexander could give for the presence of the blade by his bed, tonight there was only one reason.
