Her eyes must have drifted shut at one point, because Mrs. Holt found herself opening them as the woman whispered something beside her.
“May I ask you a question?”
Mrs. Holt blinked, taking in the gleaming blue eyes of the stranger as she rose from her knees to sit properly. She nodded in response.
“I can sense you’ve been through something. Your eyes are empty of emotion, save for agony. So tell me, if you don’t mind...who have you lost?”

Soulmates aren't simple, the spirits enjoyed playing tricks on the humans. They liked to confuse them, and make them struggle. Sometimes who you think you are supposed to be with isn't the one you are linked to. That is why soul marks aren't simple either.
Katara thinks the Avatar might be her soulmate, but she isn't in love yet. She keeps trying to tell herself she has time to fall in love, but it gets harder and harder each time. It takes a while for her to realize the truth of her situation.
