He actually takes a moment to think about what Edwin said, what he’s being asked for. Edwin wants him to be happy. Wants to know if he isn’t. And not just in the way they already complain to each other. No, Edwin wants to know the big things. The ones Charles himself doesn’t like to think about ever if he can help it.
Edwin, who has spent the last 35 years shying away from any emotion more serious than a chuckle, is asking to be let in. Let in even when he admits it doesn’t make sense to him. Edwin, who, in the literal worst place in the universe, stopped and stayed longer just to give Charles the key to his heart.

The first night, Rodney rolled over in bed, put his arm around the warm body next to him, and went on sleeping.
The second night, he stirred to near-consciousness when someone curled up behind him and breathed into his shoulder, and he had to shift around a bit and scrunch the pillow to get comfortable.
The third night, an elbow in the ribs made him blink, and when he did, he saw a shock of dark hair over sharp, pretty features. "You're not supposed to be here," Rodney said.
"I'm not," Sheppard said in a sleepy, annoyed, reasonable voice, tucked his head under Rodney's chin, and began to snore peacefully against Rodney's collarbone.

“Ah,” says Edwin, succeeding a pause that goes on longer than he plans it to. “I see.”
“Shit, no, sorry, that’s not what I—”
“Charles, you mustn’t apologize—”
“No, Eds, wait, wait. That came out all wrong.” And Charles clutches Edwin’s hand tighter, so Edwin clutches back, taking strange comfort in the curve of Charles’s fingers, the ridge of his knuckles. Terrain that is somehow more familiar to Edwin than the paths he’s carved through Hell. “What I meant is, I’m not ever gonna be, like, in love with you. Romantically. I just—” His inhale is a juttering scrape of breath excavated from deep inside, and Edwin feels it as though it is his lungs that draw it in. “I love you, Edwin. I’ve always loved you. And after you confessed in Hell, I thought—well, I thought what I felt for you had to change. But it didn’t, and it won’t. I’m never gonna have a romantic notion towards anyone in the entire world, and I love you, and it’d be aces to kiss you.”
