Summary
I spent a month or so working on this fic almost immediately after I finished These Violent Delights. Paul was my favorite character and I like to analyze his character in my spare time. I initially posted this on my Tumblr blog and now I'm posting it here! I hope that I've captured Paul as accurate as I could've because that was my main goal in writing this. I love how he's written and his misery aligns with how I write my own characters, so it was a nice, comfortable place to be in, I guess.

Paul Fleischer was not seen. Looked at, sure. Observed sometimes, if the occasion was unfortunate enough to call for it; But never seen. He couldn't afford it, not with the cards life had dealt him from the moment he was born, not with what he was born to be.
That is until Julian Fromme. Beautiful, clever Julian.
And what a relief that was, what a horror too―to finally be seen and known so perfectly.

He wasn’t stupid. He knew Paul could barely accept any affection from Julian at the best of times. He could tell Paul had never really wanted him to be eager. But to see it written, to read the words ‘yielding’, ‘passive’, and ‘doll-like’ and to know they were meant to describe him ignited a sudden, burning anger in his chest.
He pushed himself roughly up from the bed, the journal sliding off his lap to land open at his feet. He paced, the words rattling in his head. It seemed no one, neither his family nor Paul, were willing to accept a version of Julian who wanted. But he couldn’t be that Julian today. He just couldn’t be him anymore.
