Gilbert was seated at his cluttered desk, piles of medical textbooks surrounding him, their spines cracked and pages marked with colorful sticky notes. The dim light from his desk lamp flickered slightly, casting shadows that danced across the walls lined with diagrams of human anatomy. Suddenly, a soft but firm knock interrupted his concentration. As he pushed back his chair and stood up, he opened the door, only to be taken aback by the sight before him.
There stood Anne, swaying slightly on the threshold, her cheeks flushed and her eyes sparkling with a mix of mischief and inebriation. Her hair was somewhat disheveled, strands falling haphazardly across her face, and the smell of alcohol wafted toward him like an unexpected gust of wind.
“Anne?” Gilbert questioned, raising an eyebrow.
“Blythe!” she exclaimed, her words tumbling out in a delightful slur. “I need you to go out with me!”

March 2020. The Atlantic Provinces are creating a bubble to avoid a surge in Covid cases, and Anne is left outside as they close borders. Stranded in Toronto, she knows no one at all. Or does she?
“You are kidding me, Diana Barry! Baynard! Are you even hearing what you’re saying? I’m not calling Gilbert Blythe. I prefer to sleep in my dingy place and then befriend all the homeless people in Toronto and then walk to PEI and stand there until they open the damn border before calling him! It is just not going to happen! Today, tomorrow or ever, it is out of the question! I’m done with him and I will never ask him for any favours!” She had been glad not to see him in the past ten years. Well, not glad. But relieved. Because it was just too hard.

Instead of adding Bash to his property title, Gilbert in a bit of a life-crisis mode bequeaths the entirety of the farm to his brother figure, effectively making himself homeless. Luckily, there is a local family who takes boarders, and it’s no trouble on the Cuthberts seeing how fond Marilla was of his father in their youth, so he finds comfort in asking her to take him in.
The only downside is sharing a residence with his academic rival of over 5 years, the ever confusing and infuriating Anne Shirley-Cuthbert, and as they come of age things get… complicated.
(A somewhat re-imagination of season 3, as the divergence would take place the final episode of season 2. Many aspects of season 3 will remain. But mostly slightly aged up AU, in-canon world)

Anne kicks his shin and rolls her eyes. "We were not having sex," she tells Diana. "We were organising something for my photography assignment, and I fell asleep, okay?"
Diana pauses. "Allow me to rephrase: What were you two doing in the same room this morning? And by what, I don't mean why."
A bright burn rises on the cheeks of both Anne and Gilbert.
"We were just-" Anne sighs, "-you know, mucking around."
Without looking up, Diana asks daintily, "And by mucking, do you mean 'making', and by around do you mean 'out'?"
