Now, Charon did not know much about his new associate other than he was supposed to be fast, very fast. Even then, it was probably going to be annoying, since any form of change was always annoying.
Then suddenly, there was laughter in the Temple of the Styx.

Hermes was almost beside himself with excitement! Chthonic gods were fascinating, and the boatman was no exception. He had to get closer, maybe fly in circles around him a few times, or even steal his hat, just to see what the other would do. A partnership with someone far removed from his family sounded exactly like the thing he needed.

He thought it would feel good - amazing, even, to finally feel appreciated and admired in a way he had longed for since his creation. He thought it would make his thousands of years of rowing and nothing else worth it. To have someone finally acknowledge him. To comfort him and praise him, to tell him that he isn’t just a simple-minded creature, that he is loved, cared for, cherished. And yet-
It hurts.
Each time Hermes compliments him, an overwhelming, entirely unfamiliar pain shoots through his too-large body. It throbs. It burns. It hurts like nothing Charon has ever experienced. And worse yet - behind it all, there is a pleasantness to the pain. It aches in such an unbearably nice way, entirely too overwhelming and good for a monster like Charon.

Summary
It was well known that Charon - in both life and business - was a meticulous man. He was successful in his business ventures, not because of his family name, but because nothing happened within them that wasn’t carefully, scrupulously thought out. And even outside of work - because despite Hypnos’ teasing, he did do things besides work - he liked things to be in order. He knew where every cent in his personal bank account went, he had extensive lists of presents thought out well before any holiday arrived, and he always had some hand in preparing family get-togethers.
All that to say, Charon liked to have a plan.
And this instance was no different.

The inevitable question; the one that Hermes dreaded. And then, in a spontaneous moment of stupidity he said,
“Actually, this time I need two tickets. I assume that’s okay?”
There was actually a pause from Zeus at that.
“Oh, I didn’t realise you were seeing someone.”
The modern au where Hermes is almost thirty years old and still single, and to avoid disappointing his family, he tells them he's bringing his new boyfriend to Zeus' 60th birthday celebrations. One problem though: there is no boyfriend. But with the help of his friend Zagreus, Hermes finds a possible candidate to fill the role on a temporary basis: a goth antique dealer by the name of Charon.
