Settling into his new home on Destiny Islands isn't going quite as smoothly as Riku might have hoped. It's hard enough for a vampire to establish themselves in a new territory, even under the best of circumstances. Harder, when he discovers that apparently the islands have their own pair of monster hunters. Not to mention that the unknown creature in the shadows seems like an increasingly dangerous threat, especially as more and more humans disappear without a trace. When the disappearances turn to bodies with bite marks deliberately framing Riku for the killings, it seems like any hope of a peaceful existence in his new home is beyond his reach.

Riku had been standing alone, and could have passed for a statue. No human managed to be that motionless. “Confirmed it when he complained about not hearing us.”
“I didn’t even notice that we weren’t walking like normal people,” Kairi giggled softly. “But no normal person would have noticed.”

Summary
The mansion had been vacant for years. Decades, actually, waiting for it to be plausible for Riku to show up as a “lost heir” ready to claim it.
This wasn’t a popular location; islands could be dangerous for vampires. Not because of any “inability to cross moving water’ nonsense, but because islands had relatively small, stable populations. When everyone knew everyone, it was easier to be noticed. Or to have your hunting and feeding patterns noticed.
Riku was young as far as the clan was concerned, which meant he by default was given the short straw of returning to the island. Secretly, he’d been relieved; no other vampires to play nice with at his borders, and no need to worry about defending his territory.
At least not from other vampires. There was something in the shadows, some presence that had at least some intelligence behind it. He shrugged it off for now. It would bother him or it wouldn’t.
Now was the time to reacquaint himself with the island after decades away.

Kairi dismissed the bandage as easily as Sora had. Accidents happened. There was no reason to doubt Sora. However, he wore the bandage in the same place the next day and the day after that and the day after that. He wore the bandage much longer than a simple cut would have needed to heal. In a full week, he never took the bandage off.
