It seemed like the worst that could ever happen to anyone, like her entire existence had been turned on its axis, like the end of the world to a child. Then, her mother standing in front of her, gentle hands cleaning the wounds, whispering soft, comforting words.
"Ten fingers, ten toes," in a sing-along tone that always made Lucy smile. "And I'd love you even if you had none."
