Summary
Maddie swings the door open approximately thirty seconds after Buck knocks.
“You might throw up,” Buck tells her.
“Hi, Buck,” Maddie says mildly. “Why might I throw up?”
“You’re lactose intolerant.”
“I’m not following.”
“I’m milk,” Buck says. “Because, clearly, I have an expiration date.”
Her eyebrows furrow. “I thought the auction went well?”
Nonsensically, Buck says, “My soul is not well.”
OR: after the LAFD auction, Eddie reveals who his mystery bidder is. Buck, shockingly, does not take this well.

“Is that my name?” he asks Buck quietly, gripping the bunched up blankets at his waist and watching as Buck’s expression turns from soft sadness to horror.
“I…” Buck says, taking another step back. “Fuck, Eds. I’m going to find a nurse.”
Buck practically runs out the door, leaving Eddie to stare after the space he’d been standing in, and wonder just how much of his own life he’s forgotten. -

Summary
Evan is very confused, but the man’s voice is so soft and earnest that he can’t help the smile that creeps over his face. Maybe he’d had a one-night stand that was just taking really really good care of him after… after what? A fall? Alcohol poisoning? Evan shudders at the thought of being mugged. He carried pretty much everything he had to his name on him at all times, the downside of getting paid in free food, alcohol, and lodging. “Gracias a dios, Buck,” The man breathes, resting his forehead on their joined hands.
“I’m sorry,” Evan reiterates, “I-“
“Buck, it’s okay,” Brown Eyes murmurs into his hand.
“I’m sorry. What the fuck is a Buck?” Buck questions, blue eyes shining with worry. “And who the fuck are you?”

“Eds,” Buck sounds half exasperated with him, and half interested and that’s enough to make Eddie want to push on with the plan. “It would have to be someone who knew me so well that everyone would believe we were married. No one could know the truth and who would be willing to do that? I couldn’t ask anyone and I…”
“You don’t have to ask,” Eddie says it quickly, before Buck can say anything to make his tenuous grasp of his self confidence vanish. “I’ll do it.”

Buck needs help; to get his inheritance money he has to be married. Eddie offers to help, because that’s what best friends do, right? He can pretend he’s not woefully in love with Buck, surely?
Or the fake marriage AU that no one asked for but got in my head.

So maybe Buck actually is in love with his straight best friend. It's cool, though. He knows Eddie gets it, even if Maddie doesn't.

“I guess I’m having a crisis.”
“What kind of crisis? Should I be concerned?”
“You know, juice,” says Eddie.
Juice? Is that code for something?
“This priest told me that all this time I’ve been picking water over juice,” Eddie clarifies. “Not because I don’t like juice. I actually love juice. Crave it. But I pick water over it because it’s safer.”
“I don’t understand. Is it because water’s cheaper?”
“No, not that. I guess I’ve just been trying to– You know, lean into my desire for juice. Except, I tried, tonight, and while I did enjoy it, it still wasn’t– Exactly the kind of juice I’m looking for.”
Buck is so, so lost.
“Maybe you should consider a different brand?”
“What?”
“Like, say you love juice with pulp,” Buck carries on. “But so far, you’ve only tried clear, liquid juice. Maybe you tasted juice with pulp when you were a kid, and have been looking for it since. Maybe you’re looking for something, I don’t know, familiar? Maybe it’s been right in front of you, but you keep walking past it.”

“Which do you think makes you feel most loved?”
Eddie thought for a long moment. Too long, maybe. Then he shrugged, “Honestly, Buck? I have no idea.”
Buck’s brows pinched up. “What do you mean? When have you felt the most loved?”
“Don’t make a big thing of this, Buck. Promise?”
Buck made a show of crossing his heart, brows still raised curiously.
“I’m not sure I’ve ever… really felt loved in a relationship? I’m not convinced that I know what makes me feel loved…”

After finding out that Eddie doesn't know what his love language is, Buck sets about finding out for him. He begins a five week experiment, one for each love language, to figure out which will make Eddie feel the most loved.

Buck’s vision was starting to blur at the edges, a dark vignette creeping in like smoke. His hand fumbled for Eddie’s sleeve but didn’t quite make contact. He slumped further down, back pressing against the base of the table, trying to stay quiet. Trying not to make this worse.
His fingers came away from his chest, soaked in red.
No one had seen it yet.
And Buck couldn’t find the air to call out.
OR
The 118 only meant to attend a gala—but by the end of the night, Buck was shot, and nothing was ever the same again.

Summary
Eddie's never been much of a dreamer.
When he was a boy, he'd been too preoccupied changing his sisters' nappies and teaching them the ABCs. His shelves carried his ballroom dancing trophies, but he never took the competitions seriously enough to consider dance a career path. His eventual high school baseball ambition, too, was short-lived, with a baby on the horizon.
But maybe it wasn't so much that Eddie had little time to dream, but that his dreams were those of his parents and the Church. He didn't bother making any of his own, happy to follow the advice of those who seemingly knew better what to make of his life.
But now, with his recent realizations at the forefront of his mind, Eddie's learning to dream — writing his own version of a life grander than it is now.

“Hey.” Buck greets him without looking up from his screen. “How do you feel about opening a joint bank account together?”
Eddie, who was mid-sip of his juice, chokes and almost spits it across the room. “What?”
“Yeah, I’m thinking it’ll just be easier than, like, transferring each other money every month for rent and the shopping,” Buck continues.
“… Right,” Eddie replies, wary. Bank accounts are a big deal—one of the only things his father taught him. Eddie has only shared a bank account with one other person, and he was married to her.
Well, come to think of it, the situations aren’t that different. Sure, he and Buck aren’t married. But they do live together. Plus, Buck is basically another parent to his son in all the ways that matter. Maybe it does make the most sense.
OR: The five times that Buck and Eddie navigate life of acting like a domestic married couple as roommates without actually being married, and the one time they realise they kinda are.

Eddie pulls back from him with a half-confused, half-concerned furrow in between his eyebrows. “Buck?”
Buck sags against the wall. “Sorry,” he says, wiping the back of his forearm against his forehead in a mixture of frustration and newfound exhaustion. “Sorry.”
A thumb swipes across his cheekbone, searching eyes boring into his. “Buck. What’s wrong?”
Buck closes his eyes, then blinks them open. “Nothing,” he says, because he doesn’t know how to tell the truth. He doesn’t know what the truth even is. “Everything’s, uh—everything’s fine. I just—” he chews on his lip. “I was just thinking that, uh, maybe we shouldn’t go any further tonight? You know, not with Christopher in the house.”
