While he can’t say that the daily joys of running the ED have made him stronger or any of that other pseudo-motivational bullshit, it has made him pretty goddamn good at compartmentalizing - of taking whatever it is that he can’t look directly at, putting it in an iron box, and squirreling it away to never be seen again so long as he can help it.
He’s never had a problem with this strategy (never, not once, ask anyone and they’ll tell you) - until now. Because Denise Whitaker won’t fit in the fucking box.
(Or - five times that Robby learns something new about Denise Whitaker and one time she learns something new about him.)

Dennis turns his head to see Dr. Robby looking down at him with a troubled expression; his brows furrowed, lips pressed tightly together.
"I need to have a word with you," Robby mutters, tone pitched low. "In private."
There's no time for him to respond before Robby's leading them away from the board, moving his hand to rest at the small of his back, right where it hurts. Dennis shivers as the warmth seeps into his skin through the fabric.
His heartbeat quickens as Robby guides him through the bustling sea of doctors and med students, wondering what he's done that has his attending so upset.
Or: Dennis thinks he might be in trouble. Robby just wants to see what he's hiding underneath his scrubs.

Robby stood in the doorway to the bedroom, with one hand holding his motorcycle helmet, and the other still on the doorknob. He was back from his sabbatical, a whole three and a half weeks early.

Over the course of the semester, Robby had found, (almost fell to his knees in the university parking lot when he realised) that Professor Dennis Whitaker was not just pretty. He was also so soft. Soft in his gaze, looking at all his students kindly even when, in Robby’s opinion, some particularly fucking stupid questions were asked. Soft in the way he blushed, and he blushed often, a faint pink wash across his cheekbones and the bridge of his nose whenever a student told him they’d enjoyed his lecture or when Robby held eye contact for just a bit too long.
That softness made Robby want to ruin him.

Dennis didn’t think it would be too outlandish to theorize that Trinity herself had planned this terrible storm. Maybe she had even conspired with their landlord to not fix the heating in their decrepit building, forcing them to find other places to hunker down so as to not freeze to death. It certainly was a pointed choice for her to stay at Garcia's, knowing he wouldn’t want to go with, and thus leaving him with limited options of where to seek shelter from the ice and snow. Trinity could barely hold back her smirk when he had confirmed he would be staying at Robby’s.
